08/23/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: A peanut of a little girl, Nicole is quiet in her kennel, easy to leash and steps down/out carefully. Once outside, Nicole goes potty right away so is likely housetrained. She walks slowly, and I notice her paws are a bit swollen so we simply hunker down to enjoy each other’s company with some hugs and kisses. Nicole allows all handling, takes treats gently, is alert to her new surroundings, and poses for photos like a pro. She’s a little schmushy girl who’s happy to make a new friend and just mellow out with me on this too warm summer day. Wagging her tail at each kenneled dog we pass on the way back into the building, Nicole then steps up into her kennel lying down right away with a wag of her tail. Sweet, sweet, sweet, and yes, it needs to be repeated because those words perfectly describe her. Come meet our little grey peanut today. A volunteer updates: I love this little grey girl…so gentle and sweet, so happy to be out for a walk to go potty and give kisses. Her leash manners are a joy, and whatever swelling she had at intake has been resolved. When off leash, she comes when called, and when she discovered the fun of a squeaky toy, she happily walked around with it in her mouth, squeaking away. So cute! Soft and gentle, tail waggy and delish, she’s a little 54-pound peanut waiting for you to discover her and bring her home. Kisses and love are here for you, waiting in the form of a little grey girl named Nicole.
08/21/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Nicole came to the care center as a stray so we have no history of her in a home. Upon intake, she was calm and allowed all handling. For her relief walk, Nicole walked well on leash. Once in the assessment room, she appeared calm and social. She averted her eyes during Look, body relaxed, tail wagging. For Sensitivity, Nicole leaned into the assessor, tail wagging and lip licking. She became playful during Tag, following at the end of the leash, body soft. She did not pull back her paw on either Squeeze attempt. She played with Toy, and easily relinquished it. When greeting another dog on leash at the care center, Nicole approached quickly, tail high above spine. The Behavior Team recommends Nicole go to an Average home. It is recommended she be given an appropriate period of decompression to help her acclimate to her new surroundings. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing/exposing Nicole to new and unfamiliar situations. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body. Tag: 1. When introduced off leash to another dog in the care center, Nicole displays assertive behaviors- she solicits, however offers strong correction when reciprocated, then begins to correct approach very strongly. The behavior team feels that Nicole would be most comfortable as the only resident dog in a new home, before following up on her behavior around them outside the care center environment.
