NICKLE – 26497

Itake Date : 4/29/18  Intake Type: Stray

Medical Behavior: —  Age: 3 years  Sex: Male

Weight: — lbs

Medical exam pending

Let’s get to know each other a bit more…

A volunteer writes: Nickel is part of the “good boys” club. Easy peasy, friendly, handsome, well groomed, the ideal candidate to “offer” visitors to the care center as well as volunteers in training. Nickel is indeed sociable(although sometimes a little shy), well mannered, a great walker , a dog who nears his peers properly in the street and does not chase bikes or pigeons. He demonstrates nicely his house training skills and excellent leash manners. In the yard, Nickel plays a little with the ball, sits after a few prompts for treats(he sometimes jumps for them) that he samples politely and enjoys caresses that he takes in with a big smile and gentle eyes. Nickel likes his time in playgroups with both males and females .He plays softly with them. Nickel is an elegant young man, well behaved, very pleasant to be around, a great applicant for the position of man(woman)’s forever best friend. Come and meet Nickel soon at the Manhattan Care Center and take him home…

Details on my behavior are…

Date of assessment:       1-May-2018
Look:     2. Dog’s eyes are averted, body posture is stiff and fearful, tail is low and not moving. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands.
Sensitivity:          2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, eyes are averted, tail is between legs, body stiff, mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, may lip lick.
Tag:        1. Dog follows at the end of the leash, body soft.
Paw squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his/her paw.
Paw squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his/her paw.
Flank squeeze 1:              Item not conducted
Flank squeeze 2:              Item not conducted
Toy:       1. Minimal interest in toy, dog may smell or lick, then turns away.
Summary:           Nickle approached the assessor. He was a bit tense during handling and whined at times during the assessment but allowed all handling.
Summary (1):     4/30: When introduced off leash to the female greeter dog, Nickle displays brief play interest, bowing and bouncing alongside the greeter. He quickly loses interest and instead explores his surroundings.
Summary (2):     5/1- Nickel greets female dog nicely and shows brief interest in play.
Summary (3):     5/2: Nickle greets male and female dogs politely and engages in soft play when solicited.
Date of intake:  29-Apr-2018
Summary:           Nickle was jumping away but allowed handling with a slow approach.
ENERGY LEVEL:  We have no history on Nickle so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:     EXPERIENCE (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with the behaviors outlined below)
Behavior Asilomar           TM – Treatable-Manageable
Potential challenges:      Fearful
Potential challenges comments:               Fearful: Nickle is a bit fearful at the care center. It is important to always go slow and give Nickle the option to walk away from any social interaction. Nickle should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Nickle’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Nickle would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings.
