A volunteer writes: Color me premature but I think we’ve found our winner for 2017’s Best Smile of the Year. And the award goes to…Nicholas! On a recent, winter afternoon the wind whipped ferociously about our heads and I know my teeth were chattering plenty. But Nicholas? He looked as snug as a bug in a rug (or a cherry red sweater) and just try and wipe the eternal grin off of this boy’s face. Admittedly I’m known to be a sucker for the brindles but in his rich and dark chocolate and toffee-colored coat, Nick is more delicious than any delectable holiday treat. Speaking of – this 3 year-old angel is no stranger to snacks. The minute I lift a few savory delights from my bag Nicholas drops right into a sit with that megawatt smile still going strong. He takes them relatively gently (a quick brush-up on manners will perfect that in no time) and soon we’re cuddling on a bench and doing our best to stay warm. Well really it’s ME cuddling against him. He’s still beaming away. Calmly noticing passersby, pigeons, and of course endless chubby squirrels. Sadly we don’t know too much about sweet Nick’s past. He does carry a long, white scar across his muzzle, possibly one indication that life’s not always been so kind. But if my time with Nicholas taught me anything at all it’s that this boy certainly knows about making lemons into lemonade, and, really, when you’re as sugary sweet as he, it isn’t all that hard. Christmas may be behind us but every day is a day to celebrate saint Nick. Nicholas is waiting – and no doubt grinning – in adoptions at Manhattan’s ACC.
