04/26/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: This little licorice delight is proof of the expression, “Good things come in small packages”. Quiet and serious looking in his kennel, he’s bouncy and fun on a walk, taking care of his business (endlessly!) the moment we’re on the street. Ignoring a yappy dog we passed on our walk, and checking up with me often, his leash manners are lovely. Surrendered to our care because he’s “too playful” we’re also told that he was rarely walked (trained to use wee wee pads) and didn’t have any toys in the home. When he became too active, he was put in his crate. I gave Nicco a toy and he had no idea what to do with it, choosing instead to come into my lap for some cuddle time. We’re also told he loves baths and brushing, knows ‘sit’, ‘get down’ and ‘stop’, and, get this smart dude, knows how to open doors and turn on the faucet when he’s thirsty. I’m impressed! His favorite food is broccoli and potatoes, again, smart dude he knows broccoli is good for him — what a great example he’ll set for children! Nicco is adorably fun and snuggly and is ready to have a home in which he’ll learn what toys and playtime are all about. He’s a master at the snuggling part already! Come meet him today. 04/26/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Nicco pulls a bit on leash. He was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body. He was calm and relaxed during handling. Nicco did a lot of jumping up, body checking while playing tag and became mouthy (moderate) at the end of the game. He was not interested in toys. Nicco was surrender to us. Nicco is described by his previous owner as a very active, playful, exuberant, and excitable dog. He has a high activity level. Nicco is friendly with strangers. The owner stated that he barks at children in the street. He has not been around other dogs or cats. He is not bothered when you take his food bowl, toys or treats away from him”. Nicco show a bit of concern during the tag interaction he became a bit over arousal. The behavior department feels that he may do best with an experienced adopter who can follow up on this behavior in a more stable environment and can provide any necessary behavior modification. We also recommend a home without young children; older children can be considered pending interaction. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 3. Dog responds with his tail high, ears forward, mouth likely closed for at least half of the assessment item, body stiff and body checks the Assessor. Dog is often focused on other stimuli in the room. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Toy: 1. No interest.
04/27/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Nicco has been avoidant of interaction with other dogs. He has once offered a few sniffs but has not been into playgroup enough times to follow up further. The behavior department recommends allowing Nicco time to acclimate in a new environment before following up on his behavior around other dogs. There is no hsitory on in-home behavior with dogs, as previous owner cites: “He has not been around other dogs.” When off leash with other dogs, Nicco is uncomfortable with interaction. Eventually he offers a few sniffs then seeks handler attention. 4/27 update: Nicco continues to avoid interaction.
