10/01/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: So handsome his in red coat and Maybelline eyes – yes, he looks like he’s been made up for a photo shoot for Doggie GQ! He’s slender (a bit too thin so is being fed an extra meal daily), Newget is happy to join me for a walk and a chance to go potty. His coat is as soft as the finest velvet, he takes treats happily and while he wags his tail at everyone he is a bit reserved. Giving me a soft kiss to seal our friendship, he nonetheless isn’t thrilled with being tethered for photos so we do it quickly. Off leash he quietly lays his head on my knee letting me know we really are friends, and then explores the room. This handsome fellow as clearly known the love of a person before joining us as a stray and is looking for that love again. Will you be the lucky person to be loved by Newget?
10/05/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
During his stay at our care centers, Newget has been displaying high levels of arousal/frustration when attempting to engage in human interaction and appears to escalate rapidly; growling/attempting to lunge. Newget also displays a low threshold for what appears to be fear based aggression as he has been observed to growl/lunge at certain strangers attempting to interact with him and and appears to startle and react accordingly. Due to these behavior displayed, we believe placement with a New Hope Rescue would benefit Newget best at this time to further assess this behavior once in a stable environment. Consultation from a professional trainer/behaviorist is advised; force-free reward based training only is recommended. 10/01 SAFER Assessment Newget pulls a bit on leash. He was excited but very interested in interacting with handler during assessment – jumped up. He was excited during some of the handling items, but had soft body language. Newget was excitable but playful while playing tag. He shows minimal interest with toys. Newget is an active dog who needs a significant amount of exercise and mental stimulation. The behavior department feels that he can go to an experienced adult home only. Look: 3. Dog jumps on the Assessor, consistently rubs his shoulder on the Assessor, and will not allow Assessor to conduct the assessment. Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. His body is soft, likely panting, may jump up between attempts to lick Assessor. Tage: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 2. Dog gently places his open mouth over the Assesor’s hand without applying pressure. Toy 1: 1. Minimal interest. Dog may smell or lick toy, then turn away.
10/04/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
10/4: When introduced off leash to another dog in the care center, Newget is uncomfortable and attempts to avoid. He offers a low growl when approached. He arrived as a stray with no history cited around dogs. The behavior department feels that Newget would be most comfortable as the only resident dog in a home until followup outside the shelter.
