I am a neutered male black and white american staff. The shelter thinks I am about 1 YEAR 3 MONTHS old.

I came in the shelter as a OWNER SUR on 03/13/2016 from NY 10025, owner surrender reason stated was NO TIME. I came in with Group/Litter #K16-050430.

09/25/15 21:04 Basic information: Neville is a 9 month old pit bull puppy, his owner had him since he was born. He was bred at home but the previous owner had to give him up because his wife is having a baby. He’s never been to the vet. The two things his previous owner liked most about him were; he’s affectionate playful. Social Life and Personality: Around other dogs Neville is also relaxed and playful and when he plays he is exuberant. Neville is not yet house-trained and has accidents daily. Neville activity level is high and he can be described as playful, excitable, confident, affectionate, pushy and friendly. Behavior issues: Neville was friendly when his previous owner touched his food bowl, treat, toy while eating or playing. Is also friendly if he is pushed off the furniture, given a bath, if his feet are touched, his coat is brushed or if he is held or restrained. If an unfamiliar person approached them home he barks. He was afraid if an unfamiliar person approached his previous owner and isn’t bothered if he’s disturbed while sleeping. For a New Family to Know: Neville knows how to sit. For exercise he went on brisk walks twice a day. He likes to play with squeaky toys and balls. His favorite games are fetch and tug. When his previous owner was home Bucky would tend to follow him around. When left alone in the home Neville is well-behaved. Neville ate wet and dry Pedigree and at night he slept on the couch. Behavior during intake: Neville allowed handling while owner was in the room. He sat on command. When I approached him his body went stiff and she gave direct eye contact.

A volunteer writes: Neville is a handsome young man brought along with his parents Chante and Bucky. Yep, he was born and raised at home and given away as his family had no time for pets anymore. When asked what he likes the most about Neville, his previous owner answered: “He is very affectionate and playful”. I cannot agree more because those are really Neville’s prime and most obvious qualities that are nevertheless difficult to see in our shelter environment as Neville, just like his dad, Bucky, is extremely anxious. He cries and screams at any change in his environment (dogs, people, things moving or making noise) but is able to calm down and show his positive sides in gentle hands. Neville’s first task when we enter the pen was to jump on the bench and on my lap. Let’s not forget about the kisses showering my face. Indeed, he is a great cuddler and very much in need of human contact. After a while spent together, Neville took treats from my hand, quite softly. I showed him a tennis ball. He forgot the whole world around him. Let’s play! Wonderful. He retrieves. I was so surprised by the change of gears and happy that may may may be, Neville was taking the right turn. When it was time to go back to his kennel, he entered easily his den. I sat at the edge of his door, caressed his head, talked to him and told him that things would be all right as long as he believes it. I got a kiss on my hand and he got a treat in exchange… Hand in paw and paw in hand, Neville and I are wishing upon a star.

03/18/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE

Update: 3/18/16 Neville has shown some improvement while in the shelter environment, but still shows some concerning behavior when being interacted with. Neville has very frantic body movements and constantly vocalizes and whimpers due to his anxiety. It was also reported that Neville jumps very strongly on handlers during interactions, but does so in a distressed manner. In his kennel at times Neville will screech and yelp in frustration in the shelter environment. Due to his stress levels the behavior department recommends that Neville be placed in a structured and calm environment as soon as possible. SAFER: 3/15/16 Neville pulls a bit on the leash. He was shy but friendly during the assessment – low body, but trying to stay close. Neville was shy and nervous and trembled during handling, with a fearful body language. He became very fearful while playing tag. Neville was not interested in toys. Neville was surrender to us. According to his previous family described him as a playful, excitable affectionate, shy, anxious and friendly. Around children Neville is relaxed and playful and when he plays he is exuberant but gentle. Around other dogs Nevilleis also relaxed and playful and when he plays he is exuberant. Around cats Nevilleis uncomfortable; he barks and lunges at them. Nevillewas friendly when his previous owner touched his food bowl treat, toy while eating or playing”. The behavior department feels that he may do best with an experienced adopter. Nevilleis somewhat fearful and needs time to warm up to the handler. We cannot be certain if behavior may be suppressed as a result of the shelter environment. Please note that behavior may change when Nevilleis more comfortable and settled in a home environment. We also recommend a home without young children; older children can be considered pending interaction. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 2. Dog accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, shy body language, mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, may lip lick. Tag: 2. Dog is fearful but unresponsive when touched. Approaches the Assessor when the game ends. Dog is likely crouching, may have long lip or lip lick. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Toy 1. No interest.

03/16/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE

When greeting a dog through a barrier, Neville snarls, snaps and growls at the barrier. He arrived into our care with two other dogs, and Neville’s behavior around dogs was described as “relaxed and playful and when he plays he is exuberant” by his previous owner. The behavior department recommends allowing Neville time to accliamte as the only resident dog in a new environment before following up on his behavior around other dogs.
