Neveah
Hello, my name is Neveah. My animal id is #11763. I am a female brown dog at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 04-Nov-2017.
Neveah is at risk due to being diagnosed with Canine Upper Respiratory Disease Complex and will likely require home rest and a series of antibiotics for up to 14 days. This is a contagious illness to other dogs.
A Little Bit About Me…
A volunteer writes: Have you been looking for your own personal slice of heaven? Well, look no further because Neveah is the dog for you! At times, Neveah can be a bit nervous and even a little hand shy, but she is a calm, sweet lady! She’s a huge fan of good scratches behind the ears, and you’ll know she’s happy because her tail wags a mile a minute. She knows how to sit on command and once she found out I had some delicious treats she was eager to do just about anything I asked her to. Neveah appears to be housebroken and is a dream to walk on leash. While she’s not reactive toward other dogs, she can sometimes be uncomfortable around them in playgroup and may be most successful as the only dog. Neveah is waiting for you to meet her at the Brooklyn ACC!

Details on my behavior are…
Behavior Condition: 1. Green
Date of intake:: 11/4/2017
Spay/Neuter status:: No
Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: stray
Date of assessment:: 11/7/2017
Look:: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. Allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds.
Sensitivity:: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, eyes are averted, and tail is in neutral position with a relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item.
Tag:: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Or dog indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Dog might jump on Assessor once play begins.
Paw squeeze 1:: 1. Dog gently pulls back his/her paw.
Paw squeeze 2:: 1. Dog gently pulls back his/her paw.
Toy:: 1. No interest.
Summary:: During the handling assessment Neveah was playful, and friendly. She was social towards the assessor; soliciting attention, and engaging in play.
Summary:: Selective: These dogs can succeed with certain other dogs, but may be more selective or picky. They may dislike certain ‘types’ of dogs or styles of dog play so they may require extra supervision when interacting with other dogs.
Summary (1):: Neveah is anxious, and uncomfortable when approached by novel dogs. She takes time to relax, and is assertive with other dogs but escalates to a hard correction when she a dog moves quickly around her. Neveah was found as a stray with another large mixed breed dog but we do not have any further information about her behavior around other dogs. Due to the behaviors Neveah displayed during groupo,the Behavior Department recommends that Neveah be the only resident dog at this time. 11/05: When off leash at the Care Center, Neveah greets a novel male very briefly before she anxiously paces around the yard, pacing and salivating through out the session. She slows her pace when the other dog approaches and stiffens her posture but as soon as he walks away, she relaxes and returns to pacing. 11/06: Neveah greets another female dog with a stiff posture and a chin over. After the handlers interrupt to diffuse the interaction she keeps to herself and explores the yard. 11/07: Neveah remains tense throughout her session, pacing throughout the yard mostly avoiding having any interaction with the other dogs. 11/08-9: Today, Neveah was relaxed around another calm dog. She mostly kept to herself while exploring the pens. 11/10: Neveah displayed an assertive posture when greeting a nervous dog. She is slow to respond to handler interruptions, but will eventually explore the pens. 11/11: Today Neveah offered an inappropriate correction (hard barking and grabbing the dog’s cheek) when he moved quickly around the pens. 11/13: Neveah paced anxiously, slowing her gait when near the other dog. She continues to appear uncomfortable around other dogs but manages her distance well.
Date of intake:: 11/4/2017
Date of initial:: 11/5/2017
Summary:: Neveah was friendly and allowed full exam.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: AVERAGE (suitable for an adopter with an average amount of dog experience)
Behavior Asilomar: H – Healthy
Recommendations:: Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks
Recommendations comments:: Single-pet home/Recommend no dog parks: Due to the behaviors that Neveah has shown during playgroup (see GROUPBEHAVIOR SUMMARY), we feel that Neveah should not visit dog parks and be the only resident dog. The Behavior Department recommends that she be socialized in a more controlled setting until his behavior towards other dogs can be further addressed. Reward-based, force-free training can be utilized to help Neveah associate dogs with things he enjoys like toys or treats.
