09/05/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 9/1/17 Unaltered Female, Seized SAFER ASSESSMENT: 9/5/17 Summary: Nene has been unable to remove from the kennel, growling when approached and charging and snapping when attempts are made to take her out. She has also allowed minimal handling from her caretakers. Out of concern for her stress levels and due to safety concerns, we feel Nene is not a great candidate for a handling assessment at this time. INTAKE BEHAVIOR: Upon intake, Nene was tense and had a tucked tail. She did not allow handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 9/1/17 During her initial medical exam, Nene growled and snapped. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Nene so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13): Due to how uncomfortable Nene is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Nene has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. When attempts have been made to remove her from her kennel, she charges, growling and snapping at the handler. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home. Potential challenges: _X_Handling sensitivity _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Nene growled and snapped at intake and has been unable to safely handle since that time due to the potential for aggression she displays in her kennel, lunging and snapping when attempts are made to remove her from her kennel. The behavior department recommends an experienced adult home only until she can acclimate to her new home environment for the behavior to be further assessed. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is advised; force-free, reward based training only is recommended.
