Nene
Hello, my name is Nene. My animal id is #17260. I am a female tan dog at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 11 years old.
I came into the shelter as a aco impound on 29-Dec-2017, with the surrender reason stated as animal behaviour – aggressive towards people.
Nene is at risk for behavior challenges (New Hope Only determination). She has allowed minimal handling the care center, quickly escalating to warning behaviors (growling, lunging).
Let’s get to know each other a bit more…
A volunteer writes: Nene is SO CUTE that I don’t doubt for a second I was completely overbearing when I first went to meet her. She might be older and wiser but that doesn’t mean she’s seen it all and she was not as eager to meet me as I her! It took a lot of snacks and some time to convince her to her to let me put my scary leash on her, but she warmed up fairly quickly outside and since then we’ve been like Laverne and Shirley. She is easy to walk, seems housebroken, LOVES food, and has the cutest smile on either side of the Mississippi. She is still wary about her surroundings, but quickly refocuses on me if she gets startled by something (or seeks refuge in my lap!). She is like a little kid when she plays with toys (she stands up and jumps like she’s on a trampoline before I throw them), has the sweetest little tail wag, when I ask her to show me how she knows “down” she instead barrages me with kisses, and if I stop petting her before she’s had enough she pushes her little face under my hands. She has a lot of love to give and might just be what you’re missing in your life…please check her out at Brooklyn ACC!
My medical notes are…
Weight: 59 lbs

Out of concern for her stress levels and her response to restraint, we feel Nene is not a great candidate for a handling assessment at this time.

Recommendations comments:: No children: Due to how uncomfortable Nene is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. No cats: Nene is noted to attack cats. No details were given, but in light of this behavior Nene must not be placed into a home with cats or where she may come into contact with cats.
Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Potential challenges comments:: Handling/touch sensitivity: Nene has been noted to become uncomfortable with handling at times, especially when a person is reaching over her. It is important to always go slow and give Nene the option to walk away from any social interaction. Nene should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Nene’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Nene may do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to her new surroundings. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Reactivity towards other humans was displayed in the care center(tense, growling). Because this appears to present a challenge outside of the care centers, guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly advised to assess this behavior and modify/manage as needed.
