04/19/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Neko can be a little timid and shy in the shelter environment, but what a sweetheart! He’s a little skinny and rough around the edges, but has the cutest worried face. He really opened up after I walked him a few times to be playful and super affectionate. He’ll crawl into my lap, gently push his head against me to solicit more petting and likes to play fetch. He is very easy to handle on leash and tries to keep his cage clean as long as he can. He was surrendered to us because his family was unable to treat his skin condition, but they left wonderful information about him. He would follow the many children he lived with around the house, and was very gentle with them. He is said to enjoy the company of both small and large dogs (though he doesn’t want to share his food with them), but might not be a fan of cats. He likes baths, car rides, and lounging on the sofa. He sounds fit for a fairy tale! Maybe he has a role in your story…Neko would love to meet you at Brooklyn ACC!
04/02/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Neko came to us as an owner surrender due to the owner no longer having the time to properly care for him. According to the owner Neko has lived with children from the ages of 7 and up, and is affectionate and playful with all in the household. The owner reported that Neko does not guard his food, but does guard it from other dogs and should be fed separately if going to a home with other dogs. Neko was very nervous when entering the behavior room and was wary of any loud noises. He did warm up a bit after being coaxed with a few treats. He allowed the assessor to conduct all tactile assessment items while maintaining tense and fearful body language. He became very uncomfortable during the squeeze and flank items. He showed no interest in the toy on this portion of the assessment. Due to Neko’s very nervous and fearful nature we recommend an experienced adopter with no young children. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. His body posture is stiff and fearful; his tail is low and not moving. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is between his legs, body stiff, mouth closed, lip long, ears back, lip lick. Tag: 2. Dog is fearful but unresponsive when touched. Approaches the Assessor when the game ends. Dog is crouching, may have long lip or lip lick. Squeeze 1: 3. Dog closes mouth, becomes stiff. Flank squeeze 1: 3. Dog closes mouth, begins to purse lips and becomes stiff Flank squeeze 2: 3. Dog closes mouth, begins to purse lips and becomes stiff Toy 1: No interest.
04/03/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off leash with other dogs, Neko is hesitant to approach or greet. He displays a tucked body and tail and nervously paces back and forth in the pen. The gate was opened and the helper dog kept on leash to give Neko the opportunity to approach or not. He maintained his distance, and did not greet the other dog. 4/6 update: Neko greets with a leaned back body and tense face then begins to wander the pen, becoming more comfortable and relaxed, exchanging sniffs with the greeter dog.
