02/19/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
02/19/16 18:50 Basic Info: Nefali A1065548 is a 10yr old Rat Terrier who was born at home and is being surrendered due to the owner having a new baby. Nefali has never been to a veterinarian and currently has no known health issues/injuries. Socialization: Around strangers Nefali is shy/fearful & needs time to warm up to you. She’s lived with and spent time with two 4yr olds & two 1yr olds and is gentle, relaxed, respectful but she does allow them to pet her. Nefali is the same with the adults in the home. She lived with her parents a few years ago and was playful & respectful with them. She’s also lived with fish & birds and would only go up to the bird to sniff him when it made chirping/tweet noises. Nefali has never bitten/scratched any person or animal. Behavior: When you attempt to leave the home Nefali will snap (has not made physical contact with anyone) & scratch at you to go outside with you and will bark once you’re gone. During storms/fireworks Nefali will bark. She isn’t bothered by the following: having her toys/treats touched/moved, being given a bath, having her nails trimmed, being brushed or with being disturbed while sleeping/resting. Nefali will growl if you attempt to touch/move her food/food bowl while eating and she isn’t allowed on the furniture. For A New Family to Know: Nefali is described as friendly, affectionate, playful, shy (sometimes), pushy (with the owner), mellow, excitable & fearful of gates with a high activity level. Nefali enjoys drying herself off with a towel and giving kisses. When the owner is home Nefali follows them around. She enjoys squeaky toys and games of tug with her towel. Nefali is a mostly indoor dog who’s walked outside during the spring/summer months. She sleeps on a dog bed and eats dry Pedigree dog food 2x a day. She isn’t house broken and is well behaved when left home alone. Nefali’s known commands are “sit” & “stop”. Intake Behavior: Nefali was barking, growling & lunging at the admissions counselor. After a few minutes she seemed a little interested in our treats but did not eat them. To minimize her stress we had the owner assist in taking her picture, placing her collar on and placing her into a kennel. Nefali did allow me to scan her briefly as the owner held her.

02/21/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Nefali came into our center as an owner surrender on 2/19/2016. It is reported she lived with two young children ages 1 and 4, as well as lived with fish and birds. Owner reports when you attempt to leave Nefali will snap (has not made physical contact with anyone) and scratch at you to go outside with you and will bark once you are gone. Owner reports Nefali will growl if someone attempts to touch her Food while eating. Owner reports Netfali was born at home ten years ago and has never been to a veterinarian. It is reported Netfali is shy/fearful around strangers and needs time to warm up, as well as fearful of gates. During intake, Nefali was barking, growling & lunging at the admissions counselor, owner had to assist with handling. She was timid and nervous during her initial medical exam, but allowed the handling. Nefali was timid upon entering SAFER assessment room, requiring some time to warm up. She allowed her head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, tail down, tense. Nefali stood still during Sensitivity item, body tense, lip lick, head flipped and attempted to bite. Due to Nefali attempting to bite the remaining tactile portions of the assessment were skipped. Nefali showed minimal interest in Toy, sniffing a few times but never fully engaging. She approached the helper dog at an appropriate pace, ears neutral, body relaxed. Due to Nefali’s attempt to bite, she must be placed with a New Hope partner. She would benefit from a slow approach/slow introduction to all new environments due to Nefali’s reported undersocialization. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her body posture is tense; her tail is low and not moving. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 5. Dog head flips and tries to bite. Toy 1. Minimal interest. Dog smells, then walks away. Dog – dog 2. Dog approaches helper dog with tail at spine level, body not stiff, ears relaxed, and lip neutral
