A volunteer writes: Nayla was recently returned to the shelter when her owner fell on hard times. Nayla is understandably sad and misses her family. Nayla is shy at first but warms up quickly. Nayla appears to be a mellow dog. Nayla walks well on leash and enjoys the company of other dogs and people. Watch her video and if you’re interested in adopting her, come to the Staten Island Care Center and meet her.

05/15/2014 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Nayla walks nicely on the leash during her relief walk, a bit tense and fearful, but eventually warming up and leaning into the assessor to solicit attention. Nayla remains tense during the handling items of her assessment, closing her mouth and becoming stiff with short lip during the squeeze and flank items. She engages with the food during the food guarding item, and can be pushed out of the bowl with a bit of pressure. She shows minimal interest in toy and rawhide. She approaches the helper dog with soft body language. Due to her anxiety with new people and her mild discomfort with handling, we recommend that she go home with an adopter who is experienced with fearful dogs. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is between her legs, body stiff, mouth closed, lip long, ears back. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, low and a bit fearful. Squeeze 1: 3. Dog closes mouth, becomes stiff. Flank squeeze 1: 3. Dog closes mouth, begins to purse lips and becomes stiff Food: 1. Dog calmly allows the food to be moved, follows the dish, but does not interfere with the dish’s movement. Dog’s body is soft and loose, eyes soft, tail neutral. She lifts her head when hand is pushed against his cheek. Toy: 1. Minimal interest in toy, dog smells, then turns away. Rawhide: 1. Minimal interest in rawhide, dog licks, then turns away. Dog-dog: 2. Dog approaches helper dog with tail at spine level, body not stiff, ears relaxed, lip long or neutral. Helper Dog: A0999487
