If not possible, then monitor for any signs of difficulty breathing or lethargy. Many dogs will never have signs associated with a heaert murmur, but it’s something noteworthy in terms of choosing anethesia protocols and medications. A volunteer writes: At 7 years young, Naya knows what she wants and how to wrap her person around her paw to get it. So cute! Surrendered to our care due to her skin issues which will require vet attention, spend some time with her and you’ll see way beyond that. She’s smart, adorable, affectionate, and opinionated. Love her!! We’re told she’s “very housetrained” (check), likes to play with plastic bottles and will throw them up in the air and catch them (cute), is crate trained, knows ‘sit’, ‘come’ and ‘stay’, doesn’t guard her things, lived respectfully with a cat for many years, is relaxed and playful with children of all ages and lived well with another pit bull terrier. Naya is a gem. Her leash manners are lovely, she posed for some photos like a pro and does a little play-bow jig for treats (adorable), and when I reversed direction, she dug in her paws and looked at me saying, ‘this is not the route, you can’t fool me, let’s keep going this way’. Told you she was smart. I loved watching her in playgroup; she loves to play but she’s the ‘boss chick’ when it comes to keeping the other dogs in line by offering appropriate correction when needed. Naya has a lovely energy, gives a quick woof if I wasn’t fast enough with her treats, is snuggly and lively. Her expressive face will tell you exactly what’s going on behind those loving eyes, and spending time with her is a complete joy. She’s a human disguised as a dog, and will love as dogs do. What can be better than that?!
03/22/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Naya A1106297 KNOWN HISTORY: Full Profile 3/20/17 Spayed Female, Owner Surrender (Lived with owner for 7 years) Previously lived with: Adults a similarly sized dog and a cat Behavior toward strangers: Social Behavior toward children: Relaxed and respectful Behavior toward dogs: Relaxed with resident dog Behavior toward cats: Respectful with resident cat Resource guarding: None reported Bite history: None Reported Housetrained: Yes Energy level/descriptors: Social, affectionate, playful, and excitable. She has a high activity level SAFER ASSESSMENT: 3/22/2017 Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 3. Dog quickly snaps to bite leash, inadvertently makes contact with assessor’s hand, moderate pressure. Toy 3. Dog keeps a firm hold, her body a bit stiff, did not easily relinquish without trading for a treat. Summary: Naya showed a fairly low threshold for arousal with the Tag item, quickly snapping to bite leash and inadvertently making contact with assessor’s hand with moderate pressure. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Selective: These dogs can succeed with certain other dogs, but may be more selective or picky. They may dislike certain ‘types’ of dogs or styles of dog play so they may require extra supervision when interacting with other dogs. PLAYGROUP: The previous owner of Naya asked “She lived with another pitbull terrier and was relaxed with the pitbull.” Naya engages in soft play and interacts politely with respectful dogs in the care center. The behavior department recommends slow introductions between Naya and polite, gentle dogs. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 03/20/17 During her initial medical exam Naya allowed handling ENERGY LEVEL: Her owner describes Naya as an enthusiastic dog with a high activity level, which matches what we have seen in the care center. Naya will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (no young children) _X_No young children (under 5) – Naya displayed a low threshold for arousal toward leash during Tag item, she escalated fairly quickly though recovered well. We feel this impulsivity and quick movement toward leash may intimidate young children. Older, dog savvy children can be considered pending an in-depth interaction. Potential challenges: _X_Resource guarding – Naya became a bit stiff and did not relinquish toy easily, requiring a trade up with a treat. We cannot be certain whether any guarding or possessive behavior may appear in a home environment, but we recommend adopters comfortable with safe management and modification of guarding behavior in case it does. When asked to drop something she should be traded for an item of equal or higher value, in order to reward Naya for relinquishing the item she has. _X_Leash-biting – Naya quickly began jumping toward and biting the leash during Tag game, with quick snapping that made contact with assessor’s skin using moderate pressure. She was easily redirected once the game ended and the behavior quickly extinguished. This response to Tag should be noted and steps taken to avoid games evoking similar responses in the future, in case this is a sign of discomfort or distress. She otherwise shows good coping skills, even when uncomfortable, and has been quite human social with her caretakers in the care center.
03/21/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
The previous owner of Naya stated “She lived with another pitbull terrier and was relaxed with the pitbull.” Naya engages in soft play and interacts politely with respectful dogs in the care center but will offer correction for exuberant play. The behavior department recommends slow introductions between Naya and polite, gentle dogs. 3/21: When introduced off leash to male and female dogs, Naya is initially a bit tense though does approach and sniff. She offers correction for play behavior. Naya appears more comfortable when placed into a pen with non-playful dogs. 3/22-23: Naya is tolerant and polite when interacting with a calm male dog. She begins to open up, and solicits and engages in gentle play. 3/24-29: Naya greets politely and engages in some play but offers correction to more exuberant or playful dogs.
