Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: Place with a New Hope partner: Based on Navy’s bite history in addition to the fearful behavior that has been observed in the care center, we believe he would be best set up to succeed through placement with a rescue partner who can further assess his behavior in a stable home environment. No children (under 13): Due to his bite history, we are recommending an adult only home at this time.
Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Other
Potential challenges comments:: Handling sensitivity: In his previous home, Navy has bitten (drawing blood) when being handling. It is important to avoid touching Navy is areas where he may have other sensitivities. Force-free reward based training is advised when introducing or exposing Navy to new and unfamiliar situations. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: In addition to his known history, Navy has not acclimated well to the shelter environment and has displayed all appropriate warning signals when uncomfortable. Navy needs careful behavior modification and management to prevent future bites. We recommend only force-free, reward-based training methods for Navy as more aversive techniques are likely to increase fear and increase the risk of aggression.
