09/09/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
09/09/16 16:59 Nas is very good with strangers and is playful when he first meets people. He will jump on people though and has the tendency to scratch with his front paws. Nas has been around children his whole life ages 7 and up and is playful with them but also jumps on them and will knock them over. Around other dogs he is playful but is willing to bite another dog if they are aggressive towards him. He has not been around cats but often chases them if she can. Nas does bark a lot at home and is not bothered by loud noises. Nas does not mind if you take or touch his food, but he will growl at you and snap if he has a bone and someone tries to touch or take it from him. he does not mind if you take her toys or treats. He will run away with the toy think you’re playing if you take her toy. He really enjoys being bathed and brushed. Nas does not destroy much but will destroy little things that are left around on the floor. He can be hard to control. he is not bothered by loud noises. He is very protective of his owner and will put himslef between her and the stranger or will bark at them. Nas is rope reactive and will pull on the leash or chew it while it is in owners hand, treats help to de-escalate his behavior. She has a medium level of activity at home. Nas stays in the kitchen or a crate. he knows the command sit and jump. he pulls very hard on the leash and is not walked off-leash or else will run. Nas is fed dry food, never human food. Nas was very very energetic and jumps a lot. nas jumps and mouths and is also rope reactive so was difficult to handle.
09/13/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Like most adolescents, this great looking boy has lots of energy and likes to test his skills. Of course, what he considers a skill, and what we at the other end of the leash consider a skill, might be two different things! Surrendered by his family due to “no time”, we’re told he’s playful with children (but may knock them down when he jumps to play), is playful with other dogs but will try to bite if one gets aggressive, treasures his bone so don’t take it away, and enjoys being brushed and bathed. Nas was thrilled to be chosen first for a walk, making a beeline out the door to go potty. Pulling on the leash to get from one great sniff to another, the cool morning air energizes both of us. Posing for some photos, Nas does that head tilt thing I love, shows off his sit, and takes treats softly. Off leash in a small space, he loved playing with a soft toy, burying his head in my lap for some cuddles, toy in mouth. And again, like most adolescents, Nas needs some training to make him the perfect family companion. He’s smart, and since he loves treats, will learn with some positive reinforcement training. The gorgeous, friendly, tail waggy, bright eyed, energetic and active raw material is just waiting for the right person to give him love, structure and the right training to make him all that he can be
09/12/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Altered, Owner Surrender Previously lived with: Not stated Behavior toward children: Has been around children ages 7 and up, playful, will jump and knock them over. Behavior toward dogs: Playful; will bite another dog if the dog is aggressive toward him. Behavior toward cats: Has not been around but chases them if he can. FG/RG: Does not mind if his food, toys, or treats are touched, but will growl and snap if he has a bone and someone touches it. Bite history: None reported Housetrained: Not reported Energy level/descriptors: Medium level of activity at home. Other notes: He can be hard to control. Will pull and chew on leash. Does not destroy much but does destroy small things if they are left out. Knows the cues ‘sit’ and ‘jump’. AGGRESSION ASSESSMENT: 9/12/2016 Look: 1. Dog leans forward or jumps up to lick the Assessor’s face with tail wagging, ears back and eyes averted. Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. His body is soft, likely panting, may jump up between attempts to lick Assessor. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Or dog indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Dog might jump on Assessor once play begins. Flank 1/2: 1. Dog does not respond at all. Toy: 2. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. His body is between you and the toy, and he is loose and wiggly. No growling or stiffness. Summary: Nas showed no human-directed aggression during his assessment though displayed mouthy behavior (moderate pressure) throughout all handling portions with a low threshold for arousal; grabbing at the leash throughout the assessment as well, several attempts to refocus were made.
DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Tolerant: These dogs are typically non-reactive on leash and will be either friendly or indifferent off leash. They can typically tolerate some rude behavior from other dogs and can be described as having a long fuse. They show relaxed, appropriate, easy-going body language around others. PLAYGROUP: 09/12/16: When introduced off leash to another dog in the care center, Nas engages in bouts of play, at times attempting to mount in between. His previous owner cites “Around other dogs he is playful but is willing to bite another dog if they are aggressive towards him”. The behavior team feels that Nas could potentially be adopted to a home with another social, tolerant dog pending a successful pre adoption interaction and slow introductions. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 9/11/16 Nas showed no concern during his medical examination and readily allowed all handling. ENERGY LEVEL: Medium activity level reported in home RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced Adult home only _X_No children (under 13) (See known history for potential for resource guarding; low threshold for arousal, becoming moderately mouthy.) _X_No cats (See known history. No exposure to cats though chases when the opportunity presents itself.) _X_Recommend no dog parks (Though reported to be playful from the previous owner, it was also noted that he will bite if another dog becomes aggressive towards him; we recommend following up on this behavior before introduction/exposure to other dog interactions.) Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control (Because of Nas’ noted mouthy behavior, impulse control presents a challenge. We recommend practicing calm/controlled behavior, in repetition, when the opportunity arises to aid in this process.) _X_Mouthiness/Poor bite inhibition (Decreasing the force of the mouth as well as the frequency of mouthing, in this order is recommended by using force-free, reward based training as well to reinforce a soft appropriate mouth and redirect hard inappropriate mouthing onto toys.) _X_Leash-biting (Nas displays a low threshold for arousal/excitability where he redirects this energy onto the leash; working on refocusing his attention to more appropriate objects such as toys is advised.)
