Nani
Hello, my name is Nani. My animal id is #8997. I am a desexed female white dog at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 06-Oct-2017, with the surrender reason stated as animal behaviour – aggressive to other animals.
Nani 8997 is at risk for behavior challenges (New Hope Only determination) including a bite history with a small dog. Behaviorally, Nani has been timid but social with her human caretakers but uncomfortable with other dogs; when introduced to another dog in playgroup she lunged, growled, and snapped. Her previous owner noted reactivity toward other dogs including an incident where she broke from her leash and bit a small dog on a walk. Due to the severity of her behavior around other dogs and risk to small dogs if not appropriately managed, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification to address her anxiety and behavior around other dogs. There is no noted medical condition for Nani at this time.
Let’s get to know each other a bit more…

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: NEW HOPE ONLY
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations:: Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: New Hope partner: Due to all noted concerns from the owner in regards to Nani’s reactivity toward other dogs in addition to her bite history with a small dog, the behavior department recommends Nani be placed with a New Hope placement partner. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Nani to acclimate comfortably to her new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Nani to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior Nani presents with outside of the care centers. Single-pet home/Recommend no dog parks: Due to the concerning behaviors that Nani has shown during playgroup, we feel that Nani should not visit dog parks and be the only resident dog. The Behavior Department recommends that she be socialized in a more controlled setting until her behavior towards other dogs can be further addressed
Potential challenges: : Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Potential challenges comments:: On-leash reactivity: Owner noted Nani has been observed to react to other dogs on leash, lunging towards them, barking and growling Nani may need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach her to look at you rather than other dogs and novel stimuli that may startle her. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior.
