06/14/2017 AT RISK MEMO
Nala A1114886 is at risk due to a New Hope Only behavior determination. Nala has been timid and sometimes hesitant to interact, and has shown sensitivity to certain types of interactions (bared teeth and attempted to flee). She warms up to her caretakers with time and shows a preference for moving away when frightened, but due to the behaviors observed in the care center we recommend placement with a New Hope partner at this time.

06/10/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
06/10/17 13:57 Basic Info Nala is a 4 year old white and brown dog whose owners did not have the time or money to care for her or work on her behavior. She last visited a vet on 11/2016 and she had a clean bill of health. Socialization When strangers come over she will bark at them and growl and backs away from them. If they are slow and speak nicely sometimes she may approach and sniff hand. She is relaxed around children and playful but sometimes is a little rough with her play and throws her weight on small children. She is playful with other dogs and lives in a home with two other cats who she plays with as well. She has never bitten a person or animal before. Behavior Nala is house trained and does not use the bathroom where she is not supposed to. She also does not destroy household items. Nala will growl to warn you if you try to take her food away but if her warning is not heeded she will snap and attempt to bite. She enjoys baths and does not mind being brushed. She will pull her foot away when trying to trim her nails. She barks when someone unfamiliar approaches the home or rings the bell but does not mind if someone approaches her family member. New Family Nala has a high level of energy at home and likes to follow owners around the house. She does not play with toys much but likes to hide household items in her doggy bed. She is fed purina1 dry dog food twice daily. and really enjoys frozen peas as a treat. She often tries to drink out of the toilet so access to open toilet should be restricted. She is very house trained to go to the bathroom on a weewee pad. She knows the commands sit, come, be quiet and go to bed. She pulls slightly on the leash when being walked. Intake Behavior Nala backed away from counselor as he approached her and did not let him touch her. After some time she did not flinch away as much and allowed all handling for collaring, scanning and photograph.
06/14/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Can you tell how many spots counts Nala’s coat? So many. Nala is one pretty and chunky gal of very mixed lineage…all bets are open to find the right combination. Nala likes a gentle approach as she is a little bit shy in her kennel. I have to play around to leash her. Eventually, we leave for the street where she trots quite nicely, not forgetting to do her business. Nala likes to be free in the yard. She is rather friendly, requests the lap, and is clearly glad to be caressed. She runs and jumps, comes when called and takes treats politely from my hand. She is really very pleasant to spend time with and all her fears seem to have dissipated. In her previous home, Nala lived with kids, cats and dogs, played a little rough, guarded her stuff and was a bit wary of strangers. She was relinquished into our care as her former owners could not give her the training she needed to become an almost perfect pet. Well, cute and lovely Nala needs a new human and teacher…will you be the one leading her to the path of the most wonderful and loyal forever best friend? Nala is at the Manhattan Care Center.

After some times, she allowed handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 6/10/17 During her initial medical exam, Nala was tense. ENERGY LEVEL: Nala’s previous owner described her as having a high level of activity. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13): Due to how uncomfortable Nala currently is with novel stimuli, as well as her history of resource guarding, we recommend an adult only home. _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Due to all noted concerns displayed in a home environment, as well as her response on her behavior assessment, the behavior department recommends Nala be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Nala to acclimate comfortably to her new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Cinnamon to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior Nala presents with outside of the care centers. Potential challenges: _X_Resource guarding: Nala is reported to growl and snap over food. She should be left alone while eating, and should be taught the cue “drop” and other trade up games so Nala learns that dropping food or having people around while she is eating is rewarding. Behavior modification protocols for food guarding behavior can be found on aspcapro.org. _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Nala’s previous owner reported that she barks and growls at strangers. In the care center, she has displayed fearful warning behavior when uncomfortable, growling. It is important to always go slow and give Nala the option to walk away from any social interaction. Nalashould never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Nala’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Nala would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to her new surroundings.
