Nala was calm and out of curiosity she would jump up and put her paws on the counter to say hello.
02/11/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Nala is a timid lioness, at least with us and in a place she does not know. It took me a while to get from her a lovely smile, unfortunately caught in a blurry photo. Nala is a gorgeous dog of mixed lineage. We are told she could be part American Bulldog. I see a Hound, a Boxer and a Lab too…all bets are open. Nala has been outstandingly cared for. She is perfectly carved and beautifully dressed in her honey and cinnamon coat wrapping a slim body. Her eyes are glittery. She looks so elegant and healthy! Nala lived happily with her family and two young children. She played nicely with other pooches in the park. A playful and affectionate dog she was, a little shy with strangers, house trained but also using wee wee pads (maybe her owners were too busy at times) and a little protective of her food and toys. Nala is a bit anxious in her unexpected and new setting. She inspects the yard, looking and sniffing for clues. She comes when called, accepts caresses, runs briefly after a ball. A walk in the street and through the park relaxes her very much. Her tail is wagging and then comes the smile. Nala needs a new home, a new person or family, and she will be again the lively, playful and affectionate gal she was to her former owners. Come and meet her in person at the Manhattan Care Center. She is pretty, feminine, young and loving…a wonderful forever best friend she will be.
02/07/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Full Profile 2/7/17 Unaltered Female, Owner Surrender (In previous home for one year) Previously lived with: Adults and children (ages three and four). Behavior toward strangers: Shy and friendly Behavior toward children: Relaxed and playful Behavior toward dogs: Playful with dogs outside. Behavior toward cats: Unknown Resource guarding: Will growl when her food, treats, or toys are taken away. Bite history: None reported Housetrained: Yes, will go outside or on wee wee pads. Energy level/descriptors: Nala is described as playful, shy, affectionate, and friendly with a high activity level. Other notes: Nala is anxious outside, she will stop walking and shake when cars pass by. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 2/9/17 Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her body posture is stiff and fearful; her tail is low and not moving. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is between her legs, body stiff, mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, may lip lick. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body low and a bit fearful. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Toy: 1. Minimal interest, dog sniffs toy. Summary: Nala was very fearful throughout her assessment, shaking and panting the entire time. She sought out comfort from the assessor, staying close by and allowing all handling. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Selective: These dogs can succeed with certain other dogs, but may be more selective or picky. They may dislike certain ‘types’ of dogs or styles of dog play so they may require extra supervision when interacting with other dogs. PLAYGROUP: Nala would benefit from slow introductions to other dogs in the care center, as it has been observed that she may take time to warm up and become comfortable in social settings with other dogs.
ENERGY LEVEL: Nala’s previous owner described her as having a very high activity level. She is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No young children (under 5): Due to the report by the previous owner that Nala will growl when food or toys are taken from her and her level of fear. Older children who can be trusted to leave Nala alone while she is in possession or something may be considered. Potential challenges: _X_Resource guarding (Nala’s previous owner notes that she may growl when her food bowl, treats, or toys are approached or taken. We recommend that Nala be left alone while eating, and that food guarding behavior modification steps (available at ASPCApro.org) be utilized if this behavior is problematic in her future home. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Nala’s mouth, and any time something is removed she should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. She should be taught the “drop” cue and trade-up games.) _X_Fearful _X_Anxiety (Nala’s previous owner noted that she becomes anxious outside, especially around cars or loud noises. She has been observed to be very anxious in the shelter environment, panting and shaking. We recommend that Nala very slowly be introduced to new places using positive reinforcement reward-based training methods. A program to desensitize her to sounds and things that she is fearful of under supervision of a professional positive reinforcement based trainer or behaviorist is advised.)
02/08/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Nala would benefit from slow introductions to other dogs in the care center, as it has been observed that she may take time to warm up and become comfortable in social settings with other dogs. 2/8: When introduced off leash to other dogs in the care center Nala is nervous upon approach and initially shies away from approach. She eventually allows polite greeting and sniffing from the greeter dog. 2/11: Nala continues to be nervous upon initial greeting but after she warms up, she will try to solicit play by running through the pen and sniffing the other dog.
