A volunteer writes: Nala joins us with the resume of a proven family dog having lived gently with a 1 year child. Surrendered back to our care when her person lost her job, we’re told that Nala can be shy for a few minutes with new people, doesn’t guard her things, likes being brushed and bathed, is affectionate and playful, is well behaved when left home alone and is housetrained. How perfect does this sound!? I met Nala for the first time and was struck by her beauty and sweet personality. Her lush coat is a deep, deep chocolate brown highlighted in gold, her weight perfect for her size, and her tail must be on ‘automatic’ as it wags gently nonstop. Showing off her sit in exchange for a treat, she allows me to put a coat on her as it was a cold blustery morning; she looked smashing as she walked beautifully on leash to the park. Nala likes to chase the squirrels in the park and it was obvious she was looking for them when we got there – so cute! Miss Nala enjoys romping with both males and females in playgroup, and when things get too rough offers an appropriate correction. Belly rubs, kisses, playtime, fun time all make up a wonderful companion just waiting to meet you. When our time together was over Nala hopped right back into her kennel and gave me a tail wag wave goodbye. I left her with a kiss and a promise that her new family would find her soon. Help me make my promise come true.
PROFILE: 11/05/16 18:35
Basic Information
Nala is a 4 year old spayed Lab mix. She is being surrendered because her owner has lost her job and will not be able to care for Nala anymore. Nala was adopted from ACC 2 years ago. Owner stated Nala has no medical issues and last saw a vet back in 2015.
Socialization
Nala is shy for a few minutes around strangers. Nala lived with a 1 year old child. She would play in a gentle manner with the child and adults. She has never lived or spent time with any kind of animal. She has never bitten a person or animal.
Behavior
Owner stated Nala has no behavior issues and is not bothered by loud or sudden noises. Nala does not guard food, treats of any kind, or her toys. Nala does not have any issues being handled in any way. She really likes being bathed and brushed. Owner has never trimmed her nails. She will bark if someone knocks on the door or if someone unfamiliar approaches her owner.
For a New Family to Know
Nala is described as affectionate and playful once she gets to know you. She has a medium activity level. She will follow her owner around when home. She likes to play with rope toys and balls. She likes to play fetch and tug. She was kept mostly indoors and slept in her own bed. She was fed Kibbles and Nibbles. Owner gave her 2 cups twice a day. She is house trained and will go potty anywhere. She is well behaved when left home alone. She has never been left in yard alone or crate trained. She knows commands sit and stop. For exercise owner takes her to off-leash dog parks. She pulls lightly on a leash and is never walked off the leash.
Behavior during Intake
Nala tolerated all handling. She would bark at sounds that came from outside the admissions office but was wagging her tail at the same time. She did not display any signs of aggression.
Nala engages in bouncy, running play with males and females and will offer correction if mounted. Her owner reports she did not live with other dogs, but she was taken to off-leash dog parks. The behavior department feels that Nala could live with another dog with a similar playstyle.
11/6: When introduced off leash to other dogs in the care center, Nala is initially anxious, however once solicited, begins to engage in play briefly.
11/7: Nala engages in bouts of running play. She offers correction for mounting or pushy solicitation.

SAFER ASSESSMENT: 11/6/2016
Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her ears are back, her tail is down, and she has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands.
Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, body tense, mouth closed.
Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft
Squeeze 1 / 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are back.
Toy 1. Minimal interest. Dog smells, then walks away.
Summary: Nala readily allowed all handling without issue.
DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT:
Tolerant: These dogs are typically non-reactive on leash and will be either friendly or indifferent off leash. They can typically tolerate some rude behavior from other dogs and can be described as having a long fuse. They show relaxed, appropriate, easy-going body language around others.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 11/6/2016
During her initial medical examination, Nala readily allowed all handling without issue.
ENERGY LEVEL:
RECOMMENDATIONS: Average (Suitable for an adopter with an average amount of dog experience)
Profile:
11/18: Nala was easily to leash and was easily removed from her kennel. She initially pulls hard on the leash, but settles after a few minutes. When at the park, Nala is very hyper and alert, due to presence of squirrels. She will actively chase them, which helps her exert any built energy she has. After her walk in the park, she settles down, walks very calmly, and solicited appeasement behaviors (i.e. scratching back on pavement). She also showed food-motivated behaviors; she knows the command “sit”. Nala was easy to place back in her kennel.
11/19: Nala is again easily leashed and removed from her kennel. She intiially pulls hard on the leash, so a harness is used, and then she settles. Nala contiues to chase squirrels, which helps her exert any built up energy she has. Nala is easily placed back in her kennel, and settles quickly, indicating exercise is an effective form of enrichment.
