05/19/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Nahla came into our center along with a cat as an owner surrender due to the owner being evicted. It is reported she has been around children and other dogs, gentle and playful. Owner reports Nahla is housebroken and well behaved when left in the home. It is reported she isn’t bothered if anyone touches her Food, Toys, Treats. It is reported Nahla is fearful of storms and fireworks, will hide. She is described as playful, confident, friendly. Upon intake, Nahla was very fearful, growled when approached, thrashing during leashing, requiring owner to place in kennel. Nahla was social, friendly, soft, and interested in handler upon entering SAFER assessment room, jumping up to solicit attention, but did not connect or interact with assessor. When positioned for SAFER assessment, Nahla was extremely sensitive to the touch and uncomfortable, jumped back and began thrashing on leash, therefore remaining tactile items were skipped. She showed minimal interest in Toy, though this may be due to being stressed in the shelter environment as owner reports she enjoys all sorts of dog toys. When off leash with other dogs, Nahla greets, sniffs, but corrects pushy attempts at play or interaction. Although Nahla’s behavior never escalated to aggression, she did not allow touch when unfamiliar with someone and therefore must be placed with a New Hope partner. She would benefit from a slow approach/slow introduction, possibly an initial interaction without leash. Toy 1. No interest. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Nahla greets, sniffs, but corrects pushy attempts at play or interaction.
