07/10/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
07/10/17 18:32 Basic Info Mystique is a Gray and White dog whose owner was evicted and could not keep her. She last visited a vet a little over a year ago. Socialization Mystique is friendly with strangers when they come over to her house and lets them pet her but when she is outside she barks at them and backs away if they try to touch her. She has lived with children ages 11 and 10 and is calm and plays gently as well being very tolerant with them playing rough with her. She barks, lunges and growls at any other dog , cat or any other pet she sees. She has never bitten a person or animal before. Behavior Mystique is house trained and does not destroy any household items. She is not bothered by having her food, treats or toys are touched or taken. She is fine with being bathed and has never been brushed or had her nails trimmed. She barks when someone unfamiliar approaches the door or her owner. New Family Mystique has a low level of activity at home and likes to be in the same room as owners and follow them around. She likes to play with any type of toy and will chew it up. She sleeps on owners bed under a quilt. She is fed dry food twice daily. She does not have accidents in the house if she is walked thrice daily. She is well behaved when left home alone and knows the commands sit, be nice and quiet. She does not normally pull hard on the leash unless she sees someone and tries to run towards them. She is not walked off leash. Intake Behavior Mystique growled and barked at counselor when he approached her and shied away from scanner. Mystique did not allow counselor to approach and snap at hand holding the scanner, handling done by owner.
07/12/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: “Mystique” is defined as “a fascinating aura of mystery.” Also, “power surrounding someone or something.” There are a few things that remain a mystery about 5 year-old Mystique, but some things are crystal clear. She has known love. From her shimmering, silver coat down to her cleanly-trimmed nails, and of course, including her gorgeous, voluptuous figure–a sign of lazy days and hearty meals–in every way it’s obvious that Mystique had not just a house, but known a home. She is a lover of people. Surrendered to our care following her owner’s eviction, we’re told Mystique previously enjoyed staying close to her owner even in sleep, sharing their bed and snoozing underneath their quilt. Despite my being a virtual stranger on the day that lovely Mystique and I met, she treated me just the same. She clung to my side, never more than a finger away, and by the end of our time together, fitted herself so tightly underneath my arm I thought we might never part. And there brings the mystery. What must she be thinking suddenly amongst so many strangers, without a bed to share, her quilt nowhere in sight? Does she wonder if someone’s lost her? And does she wonder if they’ll come back? But Mystique is surely aptly named, for despite all of that uncertainty, there is a strength to her that’s visible and cannot be denied. While initially shy and restless, Mystique eventually allowed herself to close her eyes as she sat at my side, and when the sun fell squarely on her for the first time, I felt her breathe. Mystique appears to be housebroken, walks well on leash, and while not overly interested in toys or treats, did eventually take the latter gently from my hand. This beautiful girl’s future may be a mystery to her, but in my head, I see it clearly: another home, a brand new quilt, more lazy days, and endless love. Mystique is waiting in adoptions at Manhattan ACC.

Dog repeatedly spins toward the touch, and repeatedly tries to exit. Squeeze 1: 3. Dog closes mouth, becomes stiff. Flank squeeze 1: 3. Dog head flips while moving hip away. Flank squeeze 1: 3. Dog head flips while moving hip away. Toy: 1. Minimal interest, dog sniffs toy. Summary: Mystique was very fearful during her assessment, whale eyed, having a tense body, and head flipping throughout. PLAYGROUP: Due to history of barking, lunging, growling at other dogs (as described per owner), Mystique is muzzled for interaction with the male greeter dog. Mystique freezes and remains stiff upon approach, and attempts to avoid interaction. The behavior department recommends a single dog residence for Mystique at this time, in addition to allowing her time to decompress in a new environment. Follow up on behavior around dogs should be conducted using force free, positive reinforcement methods of training. INTAKE BEHAVIOR: Upon intake, Mystique growled, snapped, and barked at the counselor. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 7/11/17 During her initial medical exam, Mystique was very tense.
ENERGY LEVEL: Mystique’s previous owner described her as having a low level of activity. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced adopter, adult-only home (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No children (under 13): Due to how uncomfortable Mystique is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. _X_ No cats Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Mystique gives clear warnings when she is uncomfortable and does seem to choose to avoid or retreat when given the opportunity, but if prevented from moving away there is a potential to escalate to higher-level warning behaviors and possible fear-based aggression. It is important to move slowly with Mystique, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow Mystique to initiate interactions with new people. She should never be forced to greet or to interact if she is not comfortable and soliciting attention. _X_On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Mystique’s previous owners reported that she reacts to other dogs and human passerby on leash, lunging towards them, barking and growling. Mystique may need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach her to look at you rather than other dogs and novel stimuli that may startle her. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior.
