BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: NEW HOPE ONLY
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children: Due to Munch’s history of lunging at new people, and his bite history, we recommend placement in an adult only home. Place with a New Hope partner: Due to Munch’s bite history, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Potential challenges comments:: Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression: Munch bit a person multiple times in his previous home. In the care center, he has been generally friendly, but did attempt to bite the assess-a-hand during his assessment, showing that he will escalate quickly to biting. Munch needs careful behavior modification and management to prevent future bites. We recommend only force-free, reward-based training methods for Munch as more aversive techniques are likely to increase fear and increase the risk of aggression. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Munch’s previous owner reported that he reacts to human passerby on leash, lunging towards them, barking and growling. Munch may need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach her to look at you rather than people and novel stimuli that may startle him. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior.
