09/22/2017 AT RISK MEMO
Mumu A1125260 is at risk with a New Hope Only behavior determination, including a bite history, and for CIRDC. While highly human-social, Mumu had a previous incident where she bit and killed a small dog and for that reason we recommend placement with a partner who can provide her with the support and safety tools to prevent a similar incident from occurring again. She was released for rescue placement only after her bite quarantine.

09/22/2017 WEB MEMO
This cropped eared beauty is Mumu. She was slightly timid when I first met her, maintaining a tucked tail as we walked the yard. She walks nicely on the leash despite her buxom size but was cautious of my approach. I did not attempt to pet her because she made it obvious she wasn’t ready. When I met her again a few days later, Mumu would put her paws on my lap seeking affection and would lean into me as I pet her back. She had no interest in the toys I offered and would just sit with me on the bench, nose up in the air. Mumu’s gentle and affectionate nature towards people, unfortunately, does not translate to her furry friends and would require a patient, and experienced person to set her up for success. She is located at the Manhattan Care Center and is most likely sitting at the front of her kennel, patiently waiting for you.

Exam Type BEHAVIOR
CANINE BEHAVIOR EVALUATION for MUMU A1125260 KNOWN HISTORY: Limited Profile Date of intake 9/11/2017 Spayed female, stray Bite history: Yes. A small dog ran toward Mumu while Mumu was being walked; she grabbed the small dog by the neck. The small dog was killed in the interaction. SAFER ASSESSMENT: Date of assessment 9/20/2017 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her ears are back, her tail is down, and she has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture, mouth open Tag: 2. Dog follows, a bit distracted, unresponsive to each pass, body remains soft. Squeeze 1 / 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed Toy 1. Minimal interest. Dog smells, then walks away. Summary: Mumu displayed no behavior concerns during her handling assessment. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Date of initial 9/11/2017 During her initial medical exam, Mumu was tense but allowed all handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Mumu so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. In the care center, she has a medium level of energy and will benefit from daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised, such as play and long lasting chews like nylabones and kongs. IN-SHELTER OBSERVATIONS: With the Behavior staff who worked with Mumu each day, she was initially cautious and avoided handling and interaction. By session three she began approaching when called, allowing gentle petting, and leaning into her handler. She is more interested in her humans than in toys. This attention-seeking behavior has continued through the end of her hold period.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_ No dog parks – due to Mumu’s history of killing a small dog, we strongly caution against taking Mumu to dog parks or allowing Mumu off-leash. We also recommend use of a basket muzzle (with muzzle training to make wearing the muzzle a positive, exciting event for her) in case other dogs approach on the street, to prevent a repeat of the previous incident. _X_ Place with a New Hope partner – Mumu will need careful environmental management and safety tools (like the basket muzzle mentioned above) to keep Mumu and other dogs around her safe. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner to start this process and counsel adopters before placement into a permanent home. Potential challenges: _X_Social hyper-arousal – Mumu has displayed a possibly low threshold for arousal, as well as potentially high prey drive, rapidly escalating and biting small dog while running loose. We recommend only force-free, reward based training when introducing or exposing Mumu to new and unfamiliar situations, as well as keeping Mumu on leash at all times when out of the house.
