CANINE BEHAVIOR EVALUATION for Mufasa A1113933 KNOWN HISTORY: 06/01/17 Intact male, owner surrender Previously lived with: Adults, children (age 8, 10, 11) Behavior toward strangers: Unknown Behavior toward children: Tolerant Behavior toward dogs: Relaxed, playful though did not get along with one male resident dog and would growl and snap at him. Behavior toward cats: Unknown Resource guarding: Bite history: Mufasa has bitten a dog though no broken skin reported Housetrained: Yes Energy level/descriptors: Friendly and confident with a medium activity level Other notes: SAFER ASSESSMENT: 06/06/17 Summary: Due to the avoidance and distance increasing behaviors observed in-shelter, Mufasa is not an appropriate candidate for an assessment at this time. Please use his known history as guideline for more information on Mufasa in a home environment. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Mufasa is nervous when in the pen and displays appropriate warnings -lip curling- when other dogs approach him, indicating that he does not wish to interact. According to Mufasa’s previous guardian, Mufasa got along with the other dogs in his house but one male dog. Mufasa did not like this one dog and would growl and try to bite him. Mufasa did bite the male dog once 2 years ago but did not break skin. Due to the proximity sensitive behavior Mufasa has displays while at the Care Center, the Behavior Department recommends that he be the only resident dog. INTAKE BEHAVIOR 06/01/17 During intake Mufasa appeared anxious though would approach admissions counselor, though when attempting to scan he raised his lip. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 06/02/17 During his initial medical examination, Mufasa tolerated handling. ENERGY LEVEL: Mufasa has displayed a low energy level though this is likely due to fearful behavior that has come as a result of his environment. His previous owner reports a medium activity level in the previous home environment.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13) _X_Single-dog home/ no dog parks: Due to the proximity sensitive behavior Mufasa has displays while at the Care Center, the Behavior Department recommends that he be the only resident dog. _X_Place with a New Hope partner: While Mufasa’s previous owner describes an affectionate, playful dog, he is not thriving in the shelter environment and has had a hard time with handling in the care center. He has generally given clear and protracted warnings and has not escalated to threatening behavior, but we are concerned that extra pressure may elicit higher level warnings. We feel that placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification guidance in a stable home environment will best set Mufasa up for success in a future adoptive home. Potential challenges: _X_Handling/touch sensitivity: Mufasa has been noted to become uncomfortable with handling at times, especially when a person is reaching over him. It is important to always go slow and give dog the option to walk away from any social interaction. Mufasa should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Mufasa’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Mufasa may do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings. _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Mufasa has displayed fearful behavior in shelter, he displays no social behavior towards handlers and attempts to increase distance and avoid contact. Because he is so uncomfortable, Mufasa only tolerates minimal forms of direct touch.
