08/03/17 18:49 Mr. Goodbar is a large brown unaltered male; he came to the center as a stray. During intake, he allowed counselor to scan, leash, and collar him. Finder stated he had a soccer ball with him that he tore up during the intake process. He allowed the counselor to remove the pieces away from him. He kept his body loose and did not mind when people came up to greet him.

A volunteer writes: Found abandoned with only a soccer ball (that he promptly tore up upon intake!) Mr. Goodbar is a little bit sweet and a little bit nutty (in a good way!) like his name implies. Mr. Goodbar is a big boy and a bit strong on the leash, but he seems housebroken and knows a few commands. He LOVES toys and will attempt to collect as many as he can and put them in one spot. I found that Mr. Goodbar knows how to dance for treats, uprooting himself on his back two feet and prancing around until you give him a snack. He seems to do better with females than males in doggy playgroup. On our way back to his kennel, Mr. Goodbar put on the brakes as soon as we turned the corner to go back to his room. I can’t say that I blame him. He belongs on someone’s couch rather than cooped up in a cage. No worries though, he let me pick him up (yes–all 65 pounds of him) and carry him back. If you’ve got a sweet tooth like I do, ask to meet Mr. Goodbar today!

KNOWN HISTORY: None 8/3/17 Unaltered Male, Stray Other notes: SAFER ASSESSMENT: 8/5/17 Look:2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity:1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag:1. Follows at end of leash, body soft but a bit distracted. Squeeze 1:2. Dog quickly pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2:1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy 1:4. Dog becomes stiff and lip curls Summary: Mr. Goodbar was friendly and social towards the assessor. PLAYGROUP: When off leash at the Care Center, Mr. Goodbar greets a novel female dog with a soft body. He mostly explores the pen and its smell, occasionally checking in with the greeter. He is uncomfortable with the novel male dog; growling and tensing up before being separated. Mr. Goodbar was brought to us as a stray so his past behavior with other dogs is unknown. The Behavior Department recommends that Mr. Goodbar be placed only with female dogs that match his calm sociability. INTAKE BEHAVIOR 8/3/17: Upon intake Mr. Goodbar was calm and friendly, he allowed all handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 8/4/17: During his medical examination, Mr.Goodbar was nervous and anxious, allowed minimal handling.

ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Mr. Goodbar so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced adopter, adult-only home _X_No children (under 13)- Due to potential toy guarding behavior. Mr. Goodbar gave a warning of his discomfort; we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. _X_Recommend no dog parks: Due to Mr. Goodbar’s reaction towards a male dog (See Playgroup notes) it is recommended that Mr. Goodbar should not be taken to dog parks until his behavior towards other male dogs can be further assessed in a more controlled environment. It is recommended that Mr. Goodbar have adequate time to decompress from the shelter and the reward-based, force-free training be used to help Mr. Goodbar associate male dogs with positive things like toys or treats. Potential challenges: _X_Resource guarding-Mr. Goodbar is reported to become stiff and lip curls over toy resources. It is important to leave Mr. Goodbar alone while he is playing and never to take anything directly from his mouth. When he is asked to drop something, he should be traded for an item of equal or higher value, in order to reward Mr. Goodbar for relinquishing the item he has.

When off leash at the Care Center, Mr. Goodbar greets a novel female dog with a soft body. He mostly explores the pen and its smell, occasionally checking in with the greeter. He is uncomfortable with the novel male dog; growling and tensing up before being separated. Mr. Goodbar was brought to us as a stray so his past behavior with other dogs is unknown. The Behavior Department recommends that Mr. Goodbar be placed only with female dogs that match his calm sociability. 8/04: Mr. Goodbar greets a novel female dog with a soft body. He mostly explores the pen and its smell, occasionally checking in with the greeter. He momentarily, becomes sexually motivated, but disengages when handlers interrupt. 8/05: Mr. Goodbar displays an uncomfortable body posture when introduced to a novel intact male. He briefly keeps to himself before re-approaching the greeter, and begins to stiffen his body with, tall posture and very slow, subtle movements. He offers deep guttural growls, before moving away after handlers interrupt. They are separated and the session is ended. 8/6-8/9: Mr. Goodbar was social in a group of calm females briefly becoming sexually motivated but is easily re-directed.

DVM Intake Exam Estimated age: 2 years Microchip noted on Intake? negative History : stray. Was taken to an outside veterinarian (Brooklyn Roots Veterinary Hospital) and given vaccines and cephalexin. Records are with him. Was given bordetella, rabies, and DHPP on 8/4/17. Subjective: BARH Observed Behavior – anxious, nervous. Good for PE but thrashed around when attempted to microchip. Was unable to microchip. Was good with dewormer when placed in a bowl and mixed with cat food. Evidence of Cruelty seen – no Evidence of Trauma seen – no Objective P = 120 bpm R = panting, eupneic BCS: 5/9 EENT: Eyes clear, ears clean, no nasal discharge noted Oral Exam: clean adult dentition PLN: No enlargements noted H/L: NSR, NMA, CRT < 2, Lungs clear, eupnic ABD: Non painful, no masses palpated U/G: MI, 2 testicles descended MSI: Ambulatory x 4, skin free of parasites, no masses noted, mild pyoderma, pruritic, mild papules on ventrum CNS: mentation appropriate – no signs of neurologic abnormalities Assessment: Mild pyoderma Plan: cephalexin 22mg/kg PO BID x7d Microchip at time of neuter Prognosis: good SURGERY: Okay for surgery
