03/06/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: At first, Moo did not really welcome me in her kennel. I still gave her treats and told her that I loved her name and cow-print coat. That seemed to be to her liking ..Her tail wagged and she nudged her nose against the door… She got leashed uneventfully and for a walk we went around the block…What a pleasant surprise! Moo who is as pretty as a good fairy strolls nicely and does her business on the way. She does not chase the birds and is very civil to the many dogs we meet. She was found sheltered in a car with an elderly gal, lovely Nalah, so we know that she can exist peacefully with a peer she knows and likes. She does not mind a scarf around her neck or to be tethered for the photo shoot. The eye of the camera puzzles her but does not upset her whatsoever. She is fine with me petting her and even comes to me when I call her. Moo is unsure, wary and she needs a person to be slow with her to feel comfortable. I never felt uneasy around her but I know that I would have to work hard to get her trust and her love. She is very food motivated and it is certainly a great feature for training. Moo will need a very experienced owner and a steady life to bloom into a well balanced and happy pooch. She is so beautiful and has very soft sides that just need to be enhanced and her worries alleviated. Moo is worth your consideration. Come and meet her soon at the Manhattan Care Center. Another volunteer writes: Moo is the dog I look forward to be with each time I visit the care center. She is the first and the last walk of my shift. That little growl is long gone. We are friends …for life. I do not even tempt her with a treat anymore…We walk in sync and we enjoy each other’s company in the yard where she sits quietly by my side. She even started to play ball. I bet she knew all along…The camera does not bother her anymore… We are so used to each other…Moo could achieve this with you too…Trust is all it takes for a dog who went through lots of ups and downs…Will you give our little Moo a chance?
02/15/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 2/7/17 Unaltered Female, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 2/15/17 Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her body posture is a bit tense and fearful; her tail is low and not moving. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity:2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is down, body stiff with her mouth closed. Tag:1. Follows at end of leash, body low and a bit fearful. Squeeze 1: 5. Dog growls at the assessor. Toy: 1.. No interest. Summary: Moo was tense and fearful in the assessment room and towards the assessor, she needed a slow approach. PLAYGROUP: Moo has displayed concerning behavior while interacting with other dogs in the care center, and would succeed best as the only resident dog at this time. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 2/7/17 During her medical examination, Moo was very tense, fearful, started low growling during exam. She had to be muzzled. ENERGY LEVEL: RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13): Due to how uncomfortable Moo is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Due to the warning and distance-increasing behaviors shown in the care center, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide force free behavior modification. We recommend only force-free, reward-based training methods as more aversive techniques will likely increase fear and increase the risk of aggression. Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Moo has displayed fearful behavior in shelter, she displays no social behavior towards handlers and attempts to increase distance and avoid contact. Because she is so uncomfortable, Moo tolerates minimal handling.
02/08/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Moo has displayed concerning behavior while interacting with other dogs in the care center, and would succeed best as the only resident dog at this time. Moo was surrendered as a stray so her past behavior around dogs is unknown. 2/8: When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Moo is nervous as she greets a novel male dog with a tucked tail. She tolerant of his face to face greetings as she explores the pen. Manhattan Care Center: 2/24: Moo is introduced to male and female dogs. She explores the pen and will stop to greet but is tense and lick lips; she softens again once the dog walks away. When another dog’s leash is grabbed to exit the pen, Moo targets her then stiffens and begins growling at the other dogs as well. She is given space and allowed to exit the yard without incident.
