08/30/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Monty’s owner had passed away and because of this she was brought into our care centers; behaviors in the home are unknown. Due to the nature of the intake, a profile was not able to be obtained. Behavior during intake: Monty was lethargic and unable to move because of this; as a result all handling was conducted without issue. Since her stay at our care centers, Monty has displayed fearful and nervous behavior; the biggest challenge that she has struggled with has been behavior in shelter as far as passing the other dogs when removing from kennel as she appears to phobic towards loud noise/sudden movement. Because of this, Monty had an incident where she delivered a bite towards a care-taker as a result of her panic. Improvement from Monty has been shown since as she has become familiar with her caretakers and will gently solicit attention, allowing light touch. We do not want to risk reversing any of her progress by putting her into a mildly stressful situation where she may feel uncomfortable, provoking a response as we already know that when frightened she will escalate to a bite. The behavior team is choosing not to perform a SAFER assessment at this time and recommend placement with a New Hope rescue that can provide an experienced foster home who will allow her to decompression/warm up at her own pace before introduction/exposure to new and unfamiliar situations. Force-free, reward based training is advised.
