08/10/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
08/10/16 19:00 Basic Information Monte is an approximate 5 year old Rhod Ridgeback mix who was found as a stray by the police. The police were called because he was left tied up with a muzzle in this hot weather. Monte followed the police right into their vehicle. Due to his large size the police never physically touched him. Monte simply was guided where to go with the leash. Monte did not give the offices any problem and was quite during the car ride to our shelter. Basic Information Monte was tolerant of touch. Shortly after he came in I removed the muzzle and gave him water. He was tolerant of all handling. I petted Monte on his large head and cheeks and when I stopped he put his head by my hand again requesting more petting. No signs of aggression were displayed during intake.

08/14/16 16:38 A staff member writes: Hi there! My name is Monte. I like to hang out with my human friends, and say hello to other dogs. My friends love to cuddle with me, and one special friend that I spent a lot of time with even called me a ‘gentle giant’. When I’m on walks, I do prefer to have some space to feel comfortable, especially on these NYC blocks! I hope to find myself a forever home with another new human friend who is patient and has room for a big guy like me… and maybe one with a lot of snacks too! Oh yeah, especially the snacks!
08/13/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
8/13 update: While on a walk with behavior staff member, Monte showed concerning reactivity toward people on the street. A man rounded the corner and Monte tensed and began barking at him; he ceased when he was out of sight. Then again a woman, roughly ten feet away, was walking toward them and Monte again tensed and began barking. Once the woman got within close distance (almost next to) Monte lunged at her; he did not attempt to bite but did jump toward and bark–the woman was not attempting to interact nor did she make any eye contact with either handler or dog. The behavior department feels that he can go to an experienced home who will be able to manage his reactivity toward people on-leash. 8/12 SAFER: Monte pulls a bit on the leash. He was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body. Monte was calm and relaxed during handling. He followed the assessor at the end of the leash with a calm and relaxed body language when playing tag. Monte was not interested in toys. Monte did not show any concern during the behavior assessment. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, ears back, wagging tail, mouth open. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 1. No interest. Playgroup Notes: When off leash with other dogs, Monte greets politely with a soft body and wagging tail. He spends time roaming the pen and exploring. The behavior team feels that Monte should have a pre-adoption interaction to ensure compatability around a resident dog. He arrived as a stray, so it is unknown how he behaves in-home around dogs.
