07/16/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
07/16/17 09:24 Basic Information: Montana is a large black and white dog. He arrived to ACC through the NYPD after being found tied up to a pole outside. During Intake: Montana went inside the police carrier nicely prior arriving to MACC. He was a little shy inside the carrier and it took him a few minutes to open up to the admissions counselor before he finally came out. He was receptive to handling and allowed collaring. He accepted treats gently from the admissions counselor. He had a relaxed body posture and a waggy tail.
07/18/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: It wasn’t my intent, but I saved the best for last. I’m head over heels in love with this quiet boy, his furrowed brow, soft, confused and loving eyes, and the way he lay his head on my knee with his full weight. He just gave in to the silent communication we shared, and I loved it. As we sat, and I gave him treats, he stretched out next to me and rolled over for a belly rub. Clinched the deal for me, I’m more in love now than before. Montana seems housetrained, has nice leash manners, sits for treats and takes them gently, let me maneuver all over when he got himself tangled in the leash, picking up his paws and more. Back in the building, the lobby was full of people and other animals, including a small yappy dog who he completely ignored. Montana tilts his head when I talk to him, telling him that a new person will discover how awesome he is and take him home. He’s concentrating and wishing hard that it will come true. Ask to meet Montana and make him yours, it will be the best decision you’ve made in a long time…I promise.

PLAYGROUP: Montana is soft and polite while interacting, though at times has made attempt to mount female dogs. He has yet to be introduced to a male dog in the care center. The behavior department recommends slow introductions between Montana and respectful, tolerant dogs. INTAKE BEHAVIOR Upon intake, Montana was a bit shy, but then quickly warmed up and allowed all handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 7/16/17 During his initial medical exam, Montana was very tense, resisted handling, and snapped. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Montana so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Montana has displayed some fearful behavior at the care center, snapping when severely stressed. He has been social with handlers, but needs a slow approach. It is important to always go slow and give Montana the option to walk away from any social interaction. Montana should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Montana’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Montana would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings.
