05/24/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Curled up in his kennel, Monroe took a little time to decide if I was friend material, but once his mind was made up he wagged his tail, and came out for a walk. Monroe used the ‘facilities’ as soon as we were out the door, so may be housetrained, and is lovely on the leash as we circled the perimeter of the pens. He’s a gorgeous guy in his slate gray coat, his eyes matching the gray, adding a hint of hazel to the mix. When I invited him to join me on the bench he hopped up, gave me a couple of kisses, and then buried his head in my neck to give me some love. He’s an ear licker!! It tickles! Awwwwwwww… As I took some notes he lay down next to me like an old friend content to simply hang out together. The more time we spent together, the more our trust grew, and I got more soft kisses and easy tail wags. I’m looking forward to seeing Monroe again as I can see his inner beauty and soft soul and want to explore it further. He’s so worth it, he’s made that pretty obvious. Another volunteer writes: I love this dog all dressed up and sexy in his grey suit. He wags his tail as I approach with leash in hand, hops out easily, and off we go. He’s great on leash, and takes care of his ‘business’ as soon as we’re out the door. In the park we cuddle, we kiss, we pet, and he makes friends with someone who wants to meet him. He’s all about cuddling, and as he curls into me softly I feel my heart thump. Back at the building, he greets staff with an easy tail wag, and does the same with each kenneled dog we pass on our way back to his. Perhaps he’s letting them know that their turn is coming, too? He’s gentle, he’s shy, he’s a lover who needs a little time to feel safe and comfortable before opening his heart. Are you his person?
05/17/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 5/14/17 Unaltered Male, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 5/16/17 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game with coaxing. He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Toy: 1. Minimal interest, dog sniffs toy. Summary: Monroe was distracted during his assessment and focused on sniffing around the room. He became social with the assessor at times and allowed all handling. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: Monroe has show play interest when interacting with dogs in the care center. The behavior department recommends slow introductions between Monroe and social or tolerant dogs. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 5/14/17 During his initial medical exam, Monroe was tense and growling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Monroe so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) Potential challenges: _X_Fearful: Monroe is a bit fearful at the care center. It is important to always go slow and give Monroe the option to walk away from any social interaction. Monroe should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Monroe’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Monroe would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings. _X_Kennel presence: Monroe has been observed to growl when people approach is kennel. This behavior stops as soon as his kennel is opened.
