A Little Bit About Me…
A volunteer writes: Monique is a very pleasant dog to spend time with ! She is a pretty, lively and friendly middle aged gal who loves company , treats and toys. Monique is very active, enthusiastic and bites at life as if it was a tasty Belgian cake. She likes to jump for liver kibbles and run for tennis balls. She enjoys sucking on them while holding them between her paws. Her eyes are so naughty then. “Come and get me….” Monique can be submissive at times and rolls on her back for interminable belly rubs while her tail is wagging non stop. She looks like such a happy girl, a big smile lights up her face and her little kisses let me know that she is the sweetest dog on earth. Monique came to us with her 4 housemates as their owner passed away. She seems to have been well cared for, looks healthy and wears an immaculate oreo coat. I really enjoy my time with Monique, her livelihood and joy to be with a friend. She so would love to meet you and be your BFF….
Let’s get to know each other a bit more…
Basic Information: Monique is a large mixed breed female dog that appears to be a young adult. She was brought in by the NYPD after the owner died.
How is this dog around other dogs? Monique was found with four other dogs of similar size and age, both females and males.
Bite history: Monique’s bite history is unknown, but she was placed on a DOH Bite and Victim hold upon intake. She was discovered with her deceased owner, and the owner had scratch marks of an unknown origin. Monique had a puncture wound on her hind right leg that was still bleeding.
Medical Notes : Monique appeared to be in heat when she came to our facilities. She had what appeared to be a fresh puncture wound on her hind right leg that was still bleeding.
Behavior Notes: Upon intake, Monique allowed all handling. She demonstrated some hesitance with crossing thresholds but was easily coaxed through them. She allowed petting but was less relaxed than some of her siblings.
Details on my behavior are…
Date of assessment: 28-Jun-2018
Look: 1. Dog leans forward or jumps up to lick the Assessor’s face with tail wagging, ears back and eyes averted.
Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. Body is soft, likely panting, may jump up between attempts to lick Assessor.
Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Or dog indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Dog might jump on Assessor once play begins.
Paw squeeze 1: 2. Dog quickly pulls back.
Paw squeeze 2: 2. Dog quickly pull back.
Flank squeeze 1: Item not conducted
Flank squeeze 2: Item not conducted
Toy: 1. Minimal interest in toy, dog may smell or lick, then turns away.
Summary: Monique quickly approached the assessor with a soft body and jumped up in a social manner. She displayed a high level of activity and movement, jumped up several times throughout the assessment, and was a bit mouthy, applying light pressure. She was social throughout and allowed all handling.
Summary:
Single pet home/no dog parks: Due to the history of potential bites inflicted to other dogs in the previous home, a single dog household is recommended for Monique at this time.
PLAY GROUP :
7/7: Monique was muzzled for an off leash interaction due to history with the other dogs in the home. Monique stiffened and growled when approached by the helper dog.
Date of intake: 23-Jun-2018
Summary: Monique allowed handling.
ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Monique so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: EXPERIENCE (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with the behaviors outlined below)
Recommendations: No young children (under 5), Single-pet home, Recommend no dog parks
Recommendations comments:
No young children: Due to the high level of jumping and mouthing seen at the care center, we recommend a home without young children. Older children who are comfortable around large, jumpy dogs should have an in-depth interaction prior to adoption.
Single pet home/no dog parks: Due to the history of potential bites inflicted to other dogs in the previous home, a single dog household is recommended for Monique at this time.
Potential challenges: Basic manners/poor impulse control, Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition
Potential challenges comments:
Basic manners/poor impulse control: Monique jumps up a lot on people in a social manner. It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach her to control her impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended.
Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: Monique has shown some mouthiness in the care center. Little pressure is applied, but this is a behavior that should be extinguished through training alternate behaviors and lack of reward (ex. walking away whenever Monique’s teeth make contact with skin).
