SAFE 10/21/17

Molly

Hello, my name is Molly. My animal id is #9079. I am a female white dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 06-Oct-2017.

Molly 9079 is at risk for behavior challenges (New Hope Only determination), including a bite history. She has been fearful with her human caretakers, but warms up with a slow, gentle approach. She came into the care center as a stray so we have no information on her behavior in her previous home. She was released for rescue placement only after her bite quarantine. We recommend placement into an adult-only home through a New Hope partner. There is no noted medical condition for Molly at this time.

My medical notes are…

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: NEW HOPE ONLY

Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children: Due to Molly’s bite history, we recommend an adult only home. Place with a New Hope partner: Due to Molly’s bite history, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Molly to acclimate comfortably to her new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Molly to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior Molly presents with outside of the care centers.

Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Molly bit a man running by her previous home and is slow to warm up to new people. It is important to always go slow and give Molly the option to walk away from any social interaction. Molly should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Molly’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Molly would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to her new surroundings. Guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly advised to assess this behavior and modify/manage as needed.
