Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Unaltered, Owner surrender Previously lived with: Adults, children (ages 4, 5 & 10), another large dog, and a cat Behavior toward children: Playful and gentle Behavior toward dogs: Playful and gentle Behavior toward cats: Barked and growled at the resident cat FG/RG: None reported Bite history: No bite history reported Housetrained: Yes Energy level/descriptors: Mocha is described as friendly, affectionate, and playful with a very high activity level Other notes: When left alone at home Mocha is reported to sometimes chew on things (like sneakers), to go through the garbage, and to jump on the counter. Mocha is crate trained and does well for up to 8 hours. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 1/2/17 Look: 4. Dog holds eye contact while remaining motionless. Her body is stiff and becomes stiffer as assessment progresses. Toy: 1. Minimal interest, dog sniffs toy. Summary: Mocha is very fearful and became extremely stiff during Look. Due to this response, the remaining handling items were omitted. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: Mocha has been uncomfortable with approach from other dogs in the care center. At this time, Mocha may be most comfortable as the only resident dog to allow time to decompress in a new environment. Any introductions done in the future should be performed slowly, with respectful dogs on a one on one basis. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:12/29/16 During her initial medical examination, Mocha was tense and nervous. ENERGY LEVEL: RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No cats: See Known History section _X_Place with a New Hope partner: While Mocha’s previous owner describes an affectionate, playful dog, she is not thriving in the shelter environment and has had a hard time with handling in the care center. She has generally given clear and protracted warnings and has not escalated to threatening behavior, but we are concerned that extra pressure may elicit higher level warnings. We feel that placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification guidance in a stable home environment will best set Mocha up for success in a future adoptive home. We recommend only force-free, reward-based training methods as more aversive techniques will likely increase fear and increase the risk of aggression. Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
