A Little Bit About Me…

A volunteer writes: Mocha has mucho energy, a loving heart and a smile that just won’t quit and if you’re searching for a jogging partner or playdate who’s always up for more then look no further, this golden girl is the one you want! She loves getting out for a walk or even better, a game of tug in which she wins and then gets to shake the dickens out of her prize, and in playgroup she’s a bouncy powerhouse who can’t wait to roughhouse with everyone she meets. The whole world is thrilling to Mocha and she powers ahead on leash, curiously checking out the other dogs and kids in the park, snuffling all around and stopping briefly to take care of her business. Unless you like to take life at a run, a harness leash is definitely in order but this good girl wants to learn and she’ll joyfully follow her person’s lead, sitting on command for treats or a toy and doling out hugs on request. Mocha loves life and everyone in it and she’s ready to bring so much joy to a new family of any size or species. Welcome her into your heart and let the sun shine in!

Details on my behavior are…

Date of assessment: 6-May-2018
Look: 1. Dog leans forward or jumps up to lick the Assessor’s face with tail wagging, ears back and eyes averted.
Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth.
Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Or dog indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Dog might jump on Assessor once play begins.
Paw squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Eyes are averted and ears are relaxed or back.
Paw squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Eyes are averted and ears are relaxed or back.
Toy: 2. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. His/her body is between you and the toy, and is loose and wiggly. No growling or stiffness.
Summary: Mocha was soft and social throughout her assessment, however, she became a bit overstimulated when assessor attempted to engage in play (exuberant, active).
Playgroup notes:
5/3: When introduced off leash to the male greeter dog, Mocha is forward upon greeting, uses body contact, bumps to solicit play.
5/4: Mocha plays exuberantly and is quick to vocalize correction by barking at male helper dog.
ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Mocha so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: EXPERIENCE (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with the behaviors outlined below)
Potential challenges: Basic manners/poor impulse control
Mocha remains exuberant and active in the care center, making frequent attempts to jump up at handlers in a social manner. It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach her to control her impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended.
