02/25/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
02/25/17 17:29 Basic Information Mocca is a 10 month old female American Pit Bull Terrier. Owner is surrendering her because owner’s baby sitter will not baby sit with the dog present. Owner stated she adopted her from a friend when she was 6 weeks old. Owner stated she has no medical issues and last saw a vet 8 months ago for vaccinations. Socialization Mocca is shy for a few minutes around strangers. Mocca lived with kids’ ages 5 and 7 and has spent time with kids of all ages. Owner stated Mocca does very well with her kids; she is playful and tolerates all their handling. When other kids are around or too many kids she will bark at them. She plays in an exuberant manner with kids and adults. Mocca has spent time with dogs of all sizes during walks. Owner stated she is exuberantly playful with them. She has never lived or spent time with cats. She has never bitten a person or animal. Behavior Owner stated Mocca has no behavior issues but barks at thunder storms. Mocca does not guard food, treats of any kind, or toys. She tolerates all handling from her owners. Owner has never trimmed her nails. She will bark if someone knocks on the door but is not bothered if someone unfamiliar approaches her owner. For a New Family to Know Mocca is described as friendly, affectionate, and playful with a very high activity level. She will follow her owner around when home. She likes to play with balls and chew style toys. She likes to play fetch and tug. She was kept indoors only and slept in her crate. She was fed Blue Buffalo dry dog food. Owner gave her about 2 cups twice a day. She is partially potty trained. Owner stated she will poop inside her crate when indoors but will pee anywhere in the home. When walked she would only pee outside not poop. She has never been left in a yard. She does well in a crate for over 8 hours or so. She knows commands sit and is learning to give paw. Owner takes her on brisk walks for exercise. Owner stated she does not pull and is never walked off the leash. Behavior during Intake Mocca tolerated handling but would flinch and would growl when new people entered the admissions office. I was able to pick her up and place her on the counter for a photo without any issues.
02/28/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: A little peanut with big ears and wide eyes looks out from her kennel, and yes, she’s my next walk. Initially fearful, she needs to warm up on her own timetable, but within minutes her tail was wagging, she was trying to steal treats from my bag and was in my lap giving me kisses. Surrendered by her family which includes two young children because the baby sitter didn’t like her, Mocca is definitely a dog that needs to feel comfortable before interacting. Like most shy beings, she needs to be the one to approach and solicit attention when she’s ready to do so. We’re told she was playful and tolerant of her own human children but would bark at those she doesn’t know, doesn’t guard her things, likes to play with toys, is crate trained, and needs work on her housetraining skills. Staff told me they had the best time with her off leash playing with squeaky toys and balls. She’s a baby who needs love and attention and structure. Mocca’s gorgeous coat gleams with good care, her gold highlights shining in the sun,and her tail wags as she prances along on leash. She loves treats so will be easy to train with positive reinforcement. If you’re a patient person, ready to win the heart and soul of this little girl, Mocca is hoping you’ll choose her to be a part of your family.
02/26/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: 2/25/17 Unaltered Female, Owner Surrender (In previous home for nine months) Previously lived with: Adults and children (ages five and seven) Behavior toward strangers: Shy Behavior toward children: Playful and tolerant of the children she lives with, will bark at children she does not know. Behavior toward dogs: Exuberantly playful Behavior toward cats: Unknown Resource guarding: None reported Bite history: None reported Housetrained: No Energy level/descriptors: Mocca is described as friendly, affectionate, and playful with a very high activity level. Other notes: SAFER ASSESSMENT: 2/27/17 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her ears are back, her tail is down, and she has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed. Tag: 2. Dog is fearful but unresponsive when touched. Approaches the Assessor when the game ends. Dog is crouching when touched Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Squeeze 2: 2. Dog gently places her open mouth over the Assessor’s hand without applying pressure. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place her body between you and the toy. Summary: Mocca took a few minutes to warm up to the assessor and allow handling. Once she warmed up, she became very playful, jumping on the assessor, soliciting attention, and mouthing and allowed all handling. She became fearful during tag, hiding when touching and reluctant to approach again. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Selective: These dogs can succeed with certain other dogs, but may be more selective or picky. They may dislike certain ‘types’ of dogs or styles of dog play so they may require extra supervision when interacting with other dogs. PLAYGROUP: The behavior department recommends slow introductions between Mocca and unfamiliar dogs. Her previous owner reports that she has interacted playfully with other dogs in the past. Mocca should be allowed time to warm up and acclimate in social settings with dogs.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 2/25/17 During her initial medical exam, Mocca was very tense. ENERGY LEVEL: Mocca’s previous owner described her as having a very high activity level. She is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced adopter, adult-only home _X_No children (under 13): Due to Mocca’s history of barking at children she is not familiar with, and the fearful she behavior she has displayed at the care center, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control (It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach her to control her impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended.) _X_Mouthiness/Poor bite inhibition (While she applies only light pressure, Mocca was mouthy throughout the assessment and is quick to put her teeth on skin. This is likely an attention-seeking behavior, but it should be replaced with an alternative behavior as it can frighten people. We recommend never playing with bare hands – always with a toy – and ending play or attention whenever Mocca puts teeth on skin. She should be rewarded with attention and treats when she stops and/or when she is seeking attention in alternate ways.) _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression (Mocca is slow to warm up to new people, her previous owner described her as shy with strangers and this behavior has also been observed at the care center. Though observed to be human-social, Mocca will need time to warm up to the handler as she initially presents as a fearful dog, avoiding contact, shying away from direct touch. We recommend allowing Mocca to interact at her own pace, force-free, rewarding based training is advised when introducing her to new/unfamiliar situations.)
