KNOWN HISTORY: Limited Profile 6/5/17 Unaltered Female, Stray (With finder for three days) Previously lived with: Adults, a child (age five), and a small dog Behavior toward children: Playful, can be too rough Behavior toward dogs: Calm Housetrained: No Energy level/descriptors: Missy Elliot is described as energetic. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 6/7/17 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her ears are back, her tail is down, and she has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 5. Dog snaps. Toy: 1. Minimal interest, dog sniffs toy. Summary: Missy Elliot appeared uncomfortable with some handling. She head flipped repeatedly during sensitivity and then snapped. PLAYGROUP: At this time, the behavior department recommends allowing Missy Elliot a period of decompression outside the care center before immediate follow up on behavior around other dogs. Future introductions should be supervised and conducted at a slow pace, to respectful dogs. INTAKE BEHAVIOR: 6/5/17 Upon intake, Missy Elliot was active and allowed handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 6/6/17 During her initial medical exam, Missy Elliot was social and allowed handling but tensed up at times. ENERGY LEVEL: The finder described Missy as energetic. She is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13): Due to the handling sensitivity seen on her assessment, we recommend an adult only home. _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Due to Missy Elliot’s discomfort with some handling. She has shown she will snap when uncomfortable being handled. A period of decompression is recommended to allow to acclimate comfortably to her new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Missy Elliot to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior Missy Elliot presents with outside of the care centers. Potential challenges: _X_Handling/touch sensitivity: Missy Elliot has snapped during handling, showing an uncomfortability with touch in certain areas. It is important to always go slowly with handling and to be cautious when touching her in other areas as we do not know where she may have other sensitivities. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Missy Elliot to be more comfortable with this _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Missy Elliot is fearful at times in the care center. It is important to always go slow and give Missy Elliot the option to walk away from any social interaction. Missy Elliot should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Missy Elliot’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Missy Elliot would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to her new surroundings.
