RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience _X_No children (under 13)(See known history) Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression (Missy has been observed to display fearful behavior during her stay at our care centers; at times will avoid interaction and shy away from direct-touch. Missy easily startles and is made uncomfortable by loud noises and sudden movement and will display proper warning signals as well as increase distance from anything that may present a threat. We cannot be certain if any other behavior is suppressed as a result of her environment. A period of decompression is advised before introduction or exposure to new and unfamiliar situations. Force-free, reward based training is advised.) _X_Resource guarding (Missy may require positive reinforcement behavior modification to address this food guarding behavior. 11/29/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
11/29/16 11:36 Basic Information Missy is a 4 year old spayed American Pitt Bull Terrier. Owner is surrendering her due to her aggression towards anyone unfamiliar. She was a gift form a family member 4 years ago. Owner stated is in overall good health and last saw a vet back in 2014 for her spay. Socialization Owner stated she is aggressive towards strangers and will growl, bark, and may even bite if she gets close enough. She lived with kids’ ages 3, 7, 8, 9, and 11. She growls and barks at the kids if they get too close or if the kids touch her toys. She plays in an exuberant manner with adults. She does play with kids. She has never lived or spent time with other dogs, cats, or any other kind of animal. She has bitten a child back in 03/13/2015 that broke skin. This bite was reported to the Department of Health. She has never bit another animal. Behavior Owner stated she goes potty indoors, she destroys stuff indoors, and she is aggressive towards people. She is nervous during thunder storms. Owner stated she will guard food, treats of any kind, and toys. She will bark, growl, and attempt to bite if foo is touched or if a treat or toy is taken away. She is not bothered if held/restrained or if disturbed while sleeping. She does not like bath time or being brushed; she will growl and bark when these actions take place. Owner has never trimmed her nails. She will bark if someone knocks on the door and will growl and bark if someone unfamiliar approaches her owner. For a New Family to know Missy is described as pushy and anxious with a very high activity level. She will follow her owner around when home. She plays with any kind of toys but owner stated she does not play games. She was kept mostly indoors and slept anywhere. She was fed Pedigree dry dog food. Owner gave her one large bowl two times a day. She is not house-trained and will go potty indoors on a daily basis. If left home alone she will destroy household items and furniture. She has never been left in a yard and does not do well in a crate. She knows commands sit and give paw with a treat. For exercise owner took her on off the leash runs in an empty park. She pulls very hard on a leash and it’s never walked off the leash. Behavior during Intake Missy tolerated handling from me. She sat on command for her photo and jumped on me and kissed my hand. She started barking, growling, and lunging to bite when other co-workers entered the admissions office.
12/02/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Missy is dog who comes politely to the front of her kennel, takes a treat and even licks your hand through the door. We were told that Missy excitedly jumped on the admission counselor the day of her arrival at the care center and kissed her hand. Missy accepts easily my leash, and off we exit the building under a very unpleasant downpour of rain. She pulls, going nowhere, and relieves herself (she might not be house trained as per her former family) quickly. We hide under a roof. Missy’s coat will be toweled off before going back to her den. I do not know if Spanish is Missy’s preferred language, but after many tries in English, “Sienta te” did the trick. Some dogs love to be rubbed with a towel. Missy is not a fan of it, but complies, wondering what on earth I am doing to her. Back in the care center, I tether her loosely for pictures, outfit her with a scarf and snap many shots of her, none of them able to capture her eyes looking at me or the camera. Missy is still lost in a place that is not hers. As I help her back to her kennel, Missy does not object, takes another treat gently from my hand, and lays on her bed. Missy is at the Manhattan Care Center, dreaming to belong again.
