A Little Bit About Me…

A volunteer writes: We do not have much information on handsome Linus as his owner passed away but one thing is sure….He has been beautifully cared for and loved.  He is very sociable and friendly, knows his way around people and to make himself appreciated. Linus is indeed a very pleasant pooch to be around. Understandably, he is not a happy camper in his den  where he is rather quiet but take him out and this good looking gent will come to life. He is a great walker, likely very house trained , polite with other dogs met and a wonderful ball player. Take note that he does not guard his stuff and could shame a soccer player with his talents. Linus comes when called, shakes hand and hops with help on the bench for bonding. His former owner fed him  quitewell and he  is a lot of dog to love which of course we are very fond of. Linus is a young dog at 2 years of age, well brought up, playful ,  affectionate and totally ready to hop into your life and make it fun, sweet and beautiful. Come and meet Linus at the Manhattan Care Center, ask to play with him and you will see so much  more than words can tell….

Another volunteer writes:   Adopted from us a year and 20 lbs ago, Mr. Linus is back with us as his owner passed away.  Clearly fed with love, super social and friendly, Linus isn’t going to let a mere 20 lbs stand in his way of playing a good game of tug, hoping up on the bench to wiggle beside me, or simply bounce around a pen.   He doesn’t guard his toy, I can pick it up from under him, and he actually brings it back for another throw.   My biggest awwwwww moment came when another volunteer came to the fence to say hello, and Linus ran to get his toy to show it to her. He stood against the fence, tail wagging with pride and I just melted……..he was so proud of his toy.  He’s housetrained, does pull on the leash, has an amazing disposition with both people and other dogs.  He has lived well with a cat, is neutered and is going to make someone the most amazing companion.  He’s an
absolutely awesome dog who despite his unexpected change in circumstance is simply happy to make new friends.   Shouldn’t you be his #1 friend?  We hope so, and so does he.

Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. Allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands.

Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth.

Tag: 1. Dog follows at the end of the leash, body soft.

Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. Dog does not place his/her body between you and the toy.

Summary: Linus quickly approached the assessor in the assessment room with a soft body and jumped up socially. He allowed all handling and was social throughout. During tag, he was biting his leash some.

PLAY GROUP :

11/29: When introduced off leash to a female greeter dog, Linus greets with loose body and wagging tail, then seeks handler attention.

11/30: Linus is polite and tolerant of approach.

12/1: Linus greets all dogs politely and may engage in brief bouts of play with select dogs.

ENERGY LEVEL: Linus is described as active and enthusiastic. He will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and
food-dispensing toys. And we recommend only force-free, reward-based training techniques .

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: EXPERIENCE (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with the behaviors outlined below)

Potential challenges comments: Basic manners/poor impulse control: It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended.

Leash-biting: Linus is quick to grab the leash in his mouth. We recommend walking him with a toy so he cannot grab the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach him to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash.

A volunteer writes: “If you’re sitting down Linus will use that as an opportunity to come into your lap and snuggle, and he knows ‘give me a kiss’ which he showed staff.”  Can we say ‘awwwwwww’. We all know that Linus is Charlie Brown’s friend, and made sucking your thumb and carrying a security blanket an OK thing to do.  The Peanuts creator said, “Linus, my serious side, is the house intellectual, bright, well-informed which, I suppose may contribute to his feelings of insecurity”, and I think we can say that about our four legged Linus. Surrendered to our care due to “no time”, Linus comes with an outstanding resume of a family dog who lived with a young child, is a “gentle playmate”, is housebroken, will let you know he needs to go out, is well behaved when left home alone as long as he has toys with which to amuse himself and doesn’t guard his things.  Linus is happy to be leashed to go outside to go potty, but once that’s done, he’s done.  He has no interest in going for a walk at this time and wants to be back in the safety of indoors.  We’re also told that he barks when he needs something (like a walk), and knows the word ‘stop’ if he’s pulling on leash.  He’s obviously a smart dog, beautifully cared for, friendly, tail waggy and happy to steal a kiss when he’s comfortable.  On a play date with a female he was tolerant and playful and his tail never stopped wagging.   Linus needs the security and love of a new person or family to regain his balance.   He’s an awesome dog, beautifully cared for and is hoping to find the love again.   Won’t you come meet him today?

Basic Information

Linus is a young, brown pit bull with a white chest and light brown eyes. He came into our care center because the owner is unable to provide the adequate time to care for him. The owner stated that he is approximately four months old.

Socialization:

Upon entering the care center Linus immediately demonstrated playful body language, including constant tail wags and plenty of face licks. He had a soft wiggly body and his ears were pointed back. The owner let the counselor know that this is Linus’ typical behavior around children (age 6) and adults.  Around children he remains a gentle playmate. Similarly on walks Linus exhibits a relaxed demeanor and approaches dogs to sniff them. However the owner did note that he had
not been around cats or other animals so his behavior around them remains undetermined.

Behavior:

He is house broken and is not known to have accidents unless no one is available to walk him. However, the owner did mention that before an accident happens he would have given plenty of warning signs that he needed to relieve himself, such as crying/whining, and walking over to
the leash and barking. He is not prone to breaking or destroying things in the home, which the owner suggested he would only do if he became bored. Thusly it is important that he is stimulated and given plenty of toys to prevent any of that from occurring. Additionally he
does not show any signs of food, treats or toy aggression, and is known to simply look up at you as you are refilling or touching his food bowls.

For a New Family to Know:

If you are sitting down, Linus will use that as an opportunity to come into your lap and snuggle up to you. His owner mentioned that he knows the sit and come commands, as well as give me a kiss, which Linus demonstrated by running to the owner and offering a gentle face lick.
In the home he remains relaxed and will sit and observe his surroundings, barking only at times in which he needs something. On walks he has a tendency to pull, which the owner would correct by saying stop and waiting till he calmed down. Lastly he had been given
a diet exclusively made up of dry food; puppy chow. During his evaluation he was given treats but remained uninterested in the food, opting to play with the counselors instead.

Other notes: Does not usually destroy things in the home but will if he becomes bored, which can be prevented by giving him toys.

SAFER: 9/12/16

Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds.

Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture.

Tag: 3. Dog spins toward the touch, vocalizes.

Squeeze 1/2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed or back.

Toy: 1. Minimal interest in Toy, dog may smell and/or lick, then turns away.

Summary: Linus was nervous throughout his assessment, warmed up to handler though. Linus displayed no human-directed aggression.

PLAYGROUP:

09/12/16: When introduced off leash to another dog in the care center, Linus takes time to warm up, however approaches and sniffs politely. As he becomes increasingly comfortable, he shows a bit more interest in interacting and a bit of play.  His previous owner cites “Similarly on walks Linus exhibits a relaxed demeanor and approaches dogs to sniff them”.  The behavior team feels that Linus could potentially be adopted to a home with another dog pending a successful pre adoption interaction and slow introductions.

MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 9/11/16

During his medical examination, Linus was very tense/nervous; struggled when restrained.

RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (no young)
