Milo
Hello, my name is Milo. My animal id is #16715. I am a male tan dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 22-Dec-2017.
Milo is at risk for behavioral reasons. Milo is fearful and displays potential for defensive aggression. At the care center, Milo barks, growls, and lunges at people and is difficult to handle. Medically, we have no concerns for Milo, who, other than for minor wounds to his mouth, consistent with biting hard objects, presents as a healthy dog.
My medical notes are…
[LVT Intake Exam] Microchip Scan: could not scan Evidence of Cruelty: no, but found tied to fence Observed Behavior: fearful (crouched and growling) but would lunge at gate and grab bars with teeth, could not remove from crate without pole (also poled by PO on intake); minimal PE due to behavior, Bordetella vx only Sex: intact male Estimated Age: appx 3y+ Subjective: seemingly healthy dog with wounds to mouth (unknown if soft tissue or teeth line), overweight Eyes: clear Ears: clean Oral Exam: mild staining Heart: could not auscultate Lungs: could not auscultate Abdomen: WNL Musculoskeletal: overweight 5.5/6-9 Mentation: BARH Preliminary Assessment: seemingly healthy dog with oral wounds Plan: DVM intake, DA2PP/MC (scan) when calm or at Sx
Details on my behavior are…
Behavior Condition: 5. Red
Date of intake:: 12/22/2017
Spay/Neuter status:: No
Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray
Date of assessment:: 12/26/2017
Summary:: Milo is difficult to remove from the kennel, lunging and snapping when approached. He also allowed minimal handling from his caretakers. Out of concern for his stress levels and due to safety concerns, we feel Milo is not a good candidate for a handling assessment at this time.
Date of initial:: 12/22/2017
Summary:: Milo was growling and lunging.
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Milo so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: NEW HOPE ONLY
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children: Due to how uncomfortable Milo is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. Place with a New Hope partner: Milo has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: At the care center, Milo has barked, growled, and lunged at people and is unable to be safely handled. Guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is recommended to assess behavior after decompression in a new home environment. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing or exposing Milo to new and unfamiliar situations.
