Mega
Hello, my name is Mega. My animal id is #16143. I am a desexed male tan dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a returns on 21-Dec-2017.
Mega is at risk for behavioral reasons. Mega easily becomes over aroused, and resorts to mounting when he isn’t being engaged in activity. He growls when attempts are made to correct him, and handlers need to use interrupters to get him to stop. Medically, we have no concerns for Mega, who presents as a healthy dog.
Let’s get to know each other a bit more…
A volunteer writes: Let’s start with the obvious. Mega is one mega handsome dog, with a megawatt smile! I mean, an ear to ear grin that will light up the room (and your heart). He’s also a little cross eyed, which gives him the most adorable look, like he’s laughing on the inside and telling himself a secret that only he can hear. He’s a big galoomph who’s amazing on leash as he pads along perfectly by my side. Compliments? Yup, compliments galore! “Great dog, lady!” “Wow, he’s gorgeous!” “Wish I had a dog like that!” Mega was surrendered to our care as his owner is moving out of the country. We’re told that he’s outgoing with all, has been socialized and is respectful with children of all ages, is respectful and gentle with cats, as well as other dogs. Mega doesn’t guard his things, enjoys getting a bath and walking in the snow. Mega wears his gorgeous caramel coat with style, is well fed and perfectly round like a giant tootsie roll, or a small tank! Well behaved when left home alone, although he likes to get into the garbage so be sure that’s put away, he sleeps on his own bed, knows sit, stay, down, come and high five. Mega is waiting to light up your life with only the love this big guy can bring, so ask to meet him today.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: NEW HOPE ONLY
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations:: Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: Place with a New Hope partner: Due to the social hyper arousal Mega displayed in his previous home, mounting people and growling and snapping when attempts to remove him were made, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
Potential challenges: : Social hyperarousal
Potential challenges comments:: Social hyperarousal: In his previous home, Mega was reported to mount people and growl and snap when attempts were made to remove him. Immediate intervention and consultation with a qualified veterinary behaviorist/professional trainer is strongly recommended to aid in addressing this issue to prevent further behavioral concerns that may appear in the future if not treated right away. We recommend only force-free, reward based training when introducing or exposing Mega to new and unfamiliar situations.
