01/21/2017 WEB MEMO
A staff member writes: Silly Milly! I’ve seen many dogs eager to come out of their kennel, but nothing like Milly! Milly not only wiggles his entire body, but he howls and sings almost like its a lullaby: “Get me ooouuuuuut! Oooouuuuuut pleeeeeease!” It’s the most adorable howl of all howls. Once outside of his kennel, Milly runs at the speed of light to the outdoors where the air is fresh and there’s toys to grab. This boy is too easily entertained! I gave him a squeaky toy, and I almost forgot he was with me! Milly sometimes brought the toy over to me, which was super cute. I gave him a treat in exchange to reinforce his polite play invite. Oh and treats?? This boy looooooooves treats! He loves them so much, and even responded to the cue “Sit” in exchange. Milly & I bonded so well, to the point where he wanted to show me what I call the “Love Humps”. Again… that’s Silly Milly! Milly’s puppy-like energy is admirable, and I know with the right guidance, structure, and training, he will make a family proud. Come by today to meet Silly Milly and experience the silliness yourself!
01/20/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None Unaltered male, Stray Bite history: The person who found Milly brought him home for a week. Milly was left alone with the finder’s dog and bit the dog leaving one small puncture. SAFER ASSESSMENT: Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. His body is soft, panting, jumps up between attempts to lick Assessor. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Jumps on assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Summary: Milly displayed a high level of energy on his assessment, he also jumped up and mouthed the assessor throughout the assessment. He will need positive reinforcement training to teach him basic manners as well as daily physical exercise such as runs, walks, and play, and mental stimulation such as puzzle toys and Kongs. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: Due to his bite history, Milly is muzzled for his interaction. He is polite and social with both male and female dogs of varying size. He greets politely and will continue to explore the yard sniffing; he responds well to correction from a dog that is not comfortable with him. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 1/11/17 During his initial medical exam Milly appeared tense and nervous. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Milly so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (Suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience) _X_No young children (under 5): Due to Milly’s tendency to mouth skin, we feel that he may overwhelm or intimidate a young child. Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control: (It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training is recommended.) _X_Mouthiness (Milly has a tendency to put teeth on skin. This behavior should be deterred by ignoring Milly when he solicits attention this way and redirecting him onto an appropriate item. Play time should end whenever he mouths skin, and he should never be encouraged to put hands or arms in his mouth.)
