09/05/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Little Milano is a very shy furby. I know he would prefer to stay in his cozy little bed. “One has to go out, stretch his legs and do his business.” “My kennel is quite big enough and I can just do everything in here”. “Sorry, pup. We are going out.” I leash Milano, scoop him up and off we go to the yard. A little slow run around the pen and then we settle down in a grassy area. Milano’s first task is to relieve himself, no marking involved. He is definitively more active then yesterday and explores a little the pen. What a furry cutie he is! He owns the thickest cream and silky coat. He is so well groomed. Sure, he is a little scared, but he is making progress, and that is what counts. His favorite place is the bench and the lap, and as he has been so brave, I indulge Milano with lots of petting and sweet words. Milano really belongs to a home and dreams to have an owner to follow and love. Come and meet him soon at the Manhattan Care center and make him yours.
09/05/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 9/2/17 Unaltered Male, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 9/5/17 Summary: In the assessment room, Milano stayed in the corner, trembling. When the assessor approached him, he began growling. For this reason, a handling assessment was unable to be conducted. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: 9/3: When introduced off leash to dogs, Milano is fearful and keeps to self. INTAKE BEHAVIOR: Upon intake, Milano was tense and had a tucked tail but allowed handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 9/2/17 During his initial medical exam, Milano was tense but allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Milano so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. In the care center, he displays a low-medium level of activity. RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13): Due to how uncomfortable Milano is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. X_Place with a New Hope partner: Milano is fearful in the care center and allowed limited handling. He growled when approached to attempt his behavior assessment. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home. Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Milano is very fearful at the care center and has growled. He gives clear warnings when she is uncomfortable and does seem to choose to avoid or retreat when given the opportunity, but if prevented from moving away there is a potential to escalate to higher-level warning behaviors and possible fear-based aggression. It is important to move slowly with Milano, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow Milano to initiate interactions with new people. He should never be forced to greet or to interact if he is not comfortable and soliciting attention.
