04/30/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Look up the meaning behind the name “Milani” and you’ll find “gentle caress.” Also, more colloquially, “a beautiful girl who people are always jealous of.” I like both for our Milani. The first is all you find yourself wanting to give when in her presence. The second, well that’s self-explanatory. Milani came to us as a stray and at only 1.5 years-old already wears a cloak of worry in addition to her gleaming fur. Her eyes are questioning always. The obvious interpretations: “what has happened?” and “where am I?” When I first meet Milani I’m taken by her beautiful face, the white star on her chest, and her adorable spotted paws — one nail black, one nail white like tiny piano keys. She walks well next to me, she sits before me for her treats, she looks up at me as I rub a spot under her chin. But Milani is not focused on me. Her mind is like a carousel clicking through old moments and memories, probably good ones, and the present is jarring. Our little bench, while comfortable and pleasant, is not the bed she once shared. My treats, while delicious and savory, are not what she once enjoyed in a kitchen filled with light. And my snuggles, while acceptable, are not the loving hand, the gentle caress, of someone who knows all her stories without being told. “Where are they?” I think that is her question. I hope she finds the answer. Milani is waiting in adoptions at Manhattan’s ACC. Another volunteer writes: Gorgeous in her gleaming black coat, Miss Milani has clearly enjoyed the benefits of a home before joining us. Her weight is perfect for her size, she seems housetrained, her leash manners are perfect, and while she’s a bit shy she’s happy making new friends. She even tried to make friends with a couple in the park eating their lunch……guess she was hoping some lunch would happen to fall her way! Milani created a game for herself jumping up and down the park benches and then graciously posed for some pictures on one of her bench stops. Calm, easy and oh so sweet, Milani is looking for a home in which to begin her happily ever after. Come meet her today.
04/29/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Milani pulls a bit on the leash. She was calm and relaxed during handling. Milani was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. She was not interested in toys. Milani did not show any concern during the behavior assessment. The behavior department feels that she can go to an Average home. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful but unresponsive when touched. Approaches the Assessor when the game ends. Dog is likely crouching, may have long lip or lip lick. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Toy 1: No interest. Playgroup Notes: Milani engages with both males and females. She greets with loose body and wagging tail and briefly engages in play. Between play sessions she hops back onto the bench.
04/27/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Though intially nervous, Milani has opened up and shown interest in engaging in bouts of running play with males and females. The behavior department feels that Milani could be placed into a home with another social dog, with a pre-adoption interaction encouraged to ensure compatibility. She arrived as a stray so in-home behavior is unknown. When off leash with other dogs, Milani is nervous and avoidant of greeting. 4/28 update: Milani engages with both males and females today. She greets with loose body and wagging tail and briefly engages in play. Between play sessions she hops back onto the bench. 5/3 update: Milani engages in bouts of soft play with males and females. She continues to hop on the bench for “breaks” between sessions. 5/4 update: Milani engages in running play with male and female dogs. She becomes more exuberant and even mouthy as play intensifies. 5/5 update: Milani engages in short bursts of play, then also spends time to herself on the bench,
