Exam Type BEHAVIOR
CANINE BEHAVIOR EVALUATION for Mikey A1111242 KNOWN HISTORY: Limited 05/06/17 Neutered, owner surrender Bite history: Mikey bite owner on the right arm, breaking skin. Reported not to be the first incident though further details were not provided. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 05/15/17 Summary: While he has allowed handling from select caretakers, Mikey remains fearful, avoiding many forms of interaction and will increase distance. Out of concern for his stress level, Mikey is not an appropriate candidate for a SAFER assessment at this time. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: Summary MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 05/03/17 During his initial medical examination, Mikey allowed handling though remained tense throughout. ENERGY LEVEL: Mikey has displayed a low energy level in the care center, we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment though recommend daily mental and physical stimulation as an outlet to direct his energy. RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13) _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Due to his bite history in additional to Mikey’s overall fear and avoidance behavior, he may benefit best from placement with a New Hope rescue group who can further assess this behavior in a stable environment Potential challenges: _X_Handling/touch sensitivity: Mikey has been noted to become uncomfortable with handling at times. It is important to always go slow and give Mikey the option to walk away from any social interaction. Mikey should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Mikey’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Mikey would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings. _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Mikey has been observed to avoid interaction when frightened/stressed though if unable to move away he may display higher level warning signals. It is recommended that Mikey be allowed a proper time to decompress to aid in acclimating him to a new environment. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing/exposing Mikey to new and unfamiliar situations.
