12/14/16 22:06 Dog was surrendered via a family friend and came with the following note (verbatim): “He’s name is Mikey. He was born on March 15, 2013. Mikey is a chihuhua mixed with cocker spaniel. Mikey bites when he is afraid and Mikey has had seizures in the past, maybe two in the past year. I believe he suffers from epilepsy. MIkey has never been around other dogs, so he is afraid of them. MIkey was neutered back in 2014. *please be careful like I said before he bites when he is afraid.” Dog was brought into the lobby in a small soft sided carrier and was nervous (shaking and tense). KNOWN HISTORY: N/A Intact, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 12/16/2016 Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. His body posture is stiff and fearful, his tail is low and not moving. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is between his legs, body stiff, mouth closed, ears back Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body a bit fearful. Squeeze 1 / 2: 2. Dog quickly pulls back paw Toy: 1. Minimal interest in Toy, dog shows interest in squeak sound, sniffs, then turns away. Summary: Mikey remained tense throughout but allowed handling, after the assessment Mikey warmed slightly, allowed petting and to be picked up/placed in kennel. PLAYGROUP: When off leash with other dogs Mikey is fearful and will run away from interaction. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 12/14/16 During his initial medical exam, Mikey appeared to be tense, nervous and snapped at the handler. ENERGY LEVEL: RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (Suitable for an adopter with a previous amount of dog experience) _X_No children (under 13) Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression (Mikey has been observed to display fearful behavior during his stay at our care centers; at times will avoid interaction and shy away from direct-touch. Mikey easily startles and is made uncomfortable by loud noises and sudden movement and will display proper warning signals as well as increase distance from anything that may present a threat. We cannot be certain if any other behavior is suppressed as a result of his environment. A period of decompression is advised before introduction or exposure to new and unfamiliar situations. Force-free, reward based training is advised.)
