06/05/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: I have to admit, this sweet little pocket pittie really pulled on my heartstrings. Wagging her tail from the time I approached her cage, Midnight was extremely easy to walk, staying right next to me and stopping to look up from time to time (it was raining, and I got the distinct impression from her face that she was saying “Why are we out here in the rain?!”). Although Midnight loves going for walks, she doesn’t always want to be pet immediately. While she can be cautious about being touched at first, it quickly becomes clear that she has a very loving, sweet personality. It took a little coaxing to get her to start taking treats from me, but pretty soon I had her eating out of my hand. 🙂 Once Midnight was off leash in our outdoor play area, she came right up and sat next to me on the bench– clearing wanting to be close, even if she wasn’t ready for a full-on snugglefest yet. Midnight is great on the leash, seems to be housetrained, and I have no doubt that in a loving home and with a patient caretaker she would blossom into the happy, carefree doggie she is below the surface. It only took me 5 minutes into our walk to see how great this girl is– I can imagine how rewarding it would be for an adopter to bring her home and help her grow. Please come and see this special girl today.
06/06/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Full profile 6/2/17 Spayed, Owner surrender (Since puppyhood in the previous home) Previously lived with: 1 adult and another dog Behavior toward strangers: Barks then becomes relaxed. Behavior toward children: Relaxed Behavior toward dogs: Rough with play Behavior toward cats: Unknown Resource guarding: Yes, she guards toys from the other dog and growls. Bite history: None reported Housetrained: Yes Energy level/descriptors: Other notes: SAFER ASSESSMENT: 6/6/17 Look:2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity:2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is between her legs, body tense with her mouth closed. Tag:2. Follows at end of leash, fearful and attempts to exit. Squeeze 1& 2: 2. Dog quickly pulls back. Toy: 1. No interest. Summary: Midnight was fearful and timid towards the assessor with a slow approach. PLAYGROUP: When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Midnight mostly keeps to herself with calm male and female dogs. According to her previous owner, Midnight has lived with 3 large male dogs and was playful with them. Due to Midnight’s nervousness and lack of interest in socializing with novel dogs, the Behavior Department believes that Midnight would be most comfortable as the only dog in the home. DOG-DOG ASSESSMENT: Selective: These dogs can succeed with certain other dogs, but may be more selective or picky. They may dislike certain ‘types’ of dogs or styles of dog play so they may require extra supervision when interacting with other dogs. INTAKE BEHAVIOR 6/2/17: Upon intake Midnight was relaxed and mellow, she allowed all handling.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 6/3/17: During her medical examination, Midnight was timid and allowed all handling. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced adopter, adult-only home _X_No children (under 13): Midnight appears to easily startle and become uncomfortable with up close handling, for these reasons we advise against a home with children at this time. _x_Recommend no dog parks: Due to Midnight’s nervousness around novel dogs, the Behavior Department recommends that Midnight be socialized in a more controlled setting. Potential challenges: _X_Resource guarding: Midnight appears to resource guard her toys. As per her owner Midnight guards from other dogs but not from people. We recommend her be fed separately from other pets and that toys/treats only be given one-on-one situations so she does not feel a need to guard the items. _X_Fearful: Midnight is timid with new people. She manages her stress well and has not escalated or shown any aggression, but she does need time to warm up to new people. She does best with a slow approach, and should be permitted to greet new people at her own pace and to initiate interaction (rather than being approached and pet immediately by a new person) so she has time to adjust and become comfortable before she is handled. She should be spoken to softly and gently.
