Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag:2. Dog follows but constantly attempts to mount the assessor and slowly de-escalates. Squeeze 1&2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed. Toy: 1. Dog settles down close to chew, will relinquish toy to you. Summary: Midnight was friendly and allowed petting but would constantly mount the assessor. PLAYGROUP: Midnight’s previous owner did not provide any information about Midnight’s behavior around other dogs. When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Midnight greets a novel female briefly with a neutral body. He then wanders in the pen keeping to himself. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 2/25/17: During his medical examination, Midnight was friendly and allowed all handling. ENERGY LEVEL: Midnight displays a high activity level in the care center. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience) _X_No young children (under 5)
Potential challenges: _X_Resource guarding- Midnight previous owner notes that he may growl when his food bowl is approached. We recommend that Midnight be left along while eating, and that food guarding behavior modification steps (available at ASPCApro.org) be utilized if this behavior is problematic in his future home. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Midnight mouth, and any time something is removed he should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. He should be taught the “drop” cue and trade-up games. _X_Anxiety- Midnight has shown some signs of potential anxiety in the care center, vocalizing (whining, panting) continually through the SAFER. This behavior was not reported at intake, so we cannot be certain whether similar behavior will be seen in a future home environment. _X_Strength/leash pulling-Midnight is a very large, strong dog with the capability to pull over an average adopter. His adopter must be prepared and able to handle a dog of this size and strength. It is recommended that he be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which helps diminish his strength through leverage, and that he be trained using positive reinforcement, reward based training to not pull on leash.
