02/19/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
02/19/16 20:13 Midnight A1065575 and Diamond A1065576 are both being surrendered because their owner is asthmatic and can no longer keep them. He got them from a breeder five years ago. They have not been to the vet and they do not have any health issues. Socialization Midnight is fearful around strangers. He barks, lunges and tries to bite. The owner has not walked mIdnight in over two years in fear of something bad happening. He is afraid that mIdnight might bite someone or another animal and risk himself getting in trouble with the law. When he did walk him in the past , it was usually after midnight. Midnight plays exuberantly with the small children in the home and with the owners wife. The owner stated that Midnight only loves his immediate family and does not allow company in the home. Midnight plays exuberantly with Diamond and stays close to her. He has not been around other cats or dogs. He has not bitten anyone or any other animal. Behavior Midnight uses wee wee pads in the home. He likes being bathed and brushed. He allows only the owner to take away his food bowl, treats or toys away. The children in the home do not approach him when he is eating. He loves to play fetch and tug with his sister. He barks when unfamiliar people approach him or the home. Behavior during intake Midnight did not allow staff to handle. The owner leashed, scanned(-),collared and held him for photographs. He then transferred him into a kennel.

02/23/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Midnight has shown conflicted and sometimes asocial behaviors in the care center and, while tolerant of certain types of handling in certain situations, has also been difficult to handle at times and seems highly sensitive to the leash. Due to concerns expressed by his previous owner and the range of behaviors seen in the care center (additional information is in the GroupBehavior entry) we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification and guidance before placement into a permanent home. 2/21 SAFER: Midnight came into our center as an owner surrender along with another medium sized dog that he played well with according to the owner. Owner reports Midnight has not been outside for over 2 years and before that was walked with a muzzle for fearfully barking, lunging and trying to bite strangers and other dogs he sees while on walk. Owner reports Midnight plays exuberantly with children in the home, uses wee wee pads in the home and enjoys being bathed and brushed. He allowed food, toys, and treats to be removed. During intake, Midnight did not allow staff to handle him, though he did allowing handling during his medical exam. He pulled slightly on leash for his relief walk and was friendly and sociable upon entering the assessment room. Midnight allowed his head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, eyes averted, tail wag. He moved his body away during Squeeze attempt, remainder of item was performed on Flank. He showed minimal interest in Toy, sniffing a few times but relinquished easily. The Behavior Team feels Midnight would do best with an Experienced adopter that does not have children. He may benefit from a slow approach/slow introduction as well as going home to a calm, quiet, structured environment so he can relax and know what to expect. Midnight may benefit from being the only resident dog. Look: 1. Eyes are averted, tail wagging ears back. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes soft and squinty, lip lick. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1: 3. Dog moves his legs/body so that the Assessor is unable to hold the paw Flank squeeze 1/ 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all. Toy: 1. Minimal interest in Toy, relinquishes easily. dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Midnight rushes in to pen, growling/snapping towards greeter dogs face.

02/21/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
MIdnight was difficult to remove from his kennel, dodging and snapping at the leash. He was able to be leashed once the handler crouched down, coaxed him over, and very slowly placed it over his head. When attempting to collar Midnight, he displayed similar behavior, first dodging the leash and collar and beginning to snap. A slower approach was again used to be able to collar Midnight. He showed some social behavior toward the human handler, but would begin to bark and lunge toward passing humans and dogs in the yard. When off leash with other dogs, Midnight stiffens and barks at the female greeter through the fence. Midnight rushes in to the pen, growling and snapping toward the greeter dog’s face. He is separated by a handler who was able to step on his leash and remove him from the pen.
