04/18/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
04/18/16 Mickey was surrendered for behavioral reasons. His owner got him as a small puppy from a breeder. She thinks Mickey has some dental issues. He takes fish oil vitamin treats. Owner says that when around strangers Mickey is shy at first but becomes friendly with women quickly and men more slowly. Mickey has not lived with children but owner says he normally tries to avoid them and is fearful of them. Mickey once (4 years ago) bit his owner’s face while she was blowing raspberries on his stomach, causing 3 puncture marks. At the dog park, he’s relaxed and playful (likes to run with and chase) with little dogs. He avoids large dogs and will growl and walk away if they persistently initiate play with him. He lived with a small female dog and is often relaxed around her but sometimes pushes against her while she’s at the baby gate, causing her to snap at him, which he usually tolerates. Once while home alone (3 months ago), he bit her nose, causing a large laceration. Mickey also lived with a cat in the past, and owner says he was relaxed, respectful, and tolerant of her; he walked away when she swatted him. All bites are described above. Owner says recently Mickey has been destructive while alone in the house; he sometimes chews wee-wee pads and knocks things off the table. Mickey hides during thunder storms. Owner says Mickey doesn’t tolerate people touching his food bow. She says he’ll first stiffen up and growl when people get close and he may snap if they continue. He allows people to take toys from his mouth but snaps at them when they take stolen objects from him. Mickey is friendly when told to get off of furniture, and is unbothered with being held. Owner says in order to bathe him, Mickey has to be on leash because he tries to jump out of the tub. Mickey is described as friendly, mellow, affectionate, and anxious with a medium activity level. When home, Mickey usually follows his owner and enjoys stuffed toys. When home alone, Mickey has recently begin being destructive. Mickey gets walked twice per day, and is trained to use wee-wee pads and go outside to potty. Mickey was fed natural balance dry food. Mickey was put in a pop-up crate overnight when he got into something and would whine. Mickey approached me and had a soft body and open mouth while I pet him, scanned him (+), collared him, picked him up, and positioned him for pictures. He lied down next to my feet while I worked at the computer.

According to the owner, Mickey has stopped using wee-wee pads, now trying to eat them. Owner reports Mickey is no longer getting along with other Lhasa Apso he has been living with in the house for the past few years. It is reported Mickey is shy at first with strangers, but will warm up. Owner reports Mickey is fearful of children and tries to avoid them. It is reported Mickey is uncomfortable around larger dogs and may lip curl and snarl at them but is typically playful and respectful of other small dogs. Mickey has reportedly lived with a cat in the past, tolerant. Owner reports Mickey will become stiff and growl, if food bowl is touched while eating. If persisting towards the bowl, owner reports he may also try to snap. He may snap when attempting to give a bath. Mickey was friendly during intake, approaching counselor when called and allowed petting and to be picked up. Mickey walked nicely on leash for his relief walk. He was friendly and sociable upon entering SAFER assessment room, soliciting attention from assessor, jumping up lightly with tail wagging. He allowed his head to be cupped during Look item, wagging. Mickey stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, lip lick. Before Tag game, he laid down and exposed his belly, rolling playfully on the floor. Mickey followed at the end of the leash for Tag game, a bit distracted, approached assessor at end of game. He did not pull his paw back on both Squeeze attempts. Mickey showed no interest in Toy. When off leash with other dogs, Mickey mostly keeps to himself and wanders. Due to various instances in which owner reports Mickey has tried to snap, even though he has displayed none of these behaviors while here at the center, the Behavior Team feels he would do best placed with a New Hope partner. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, lip lick. Tag: 2. Dog follows at the end of the leash, a bit distracted, approaches assessor at end of game. Squeeze 1 / 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds.
