DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: Summary INTAKE BEHAVIOR Upon intake, Miami was barking and backing away. After a few minutes, he approached the counselor and allowed handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 7/8/17 During his initial medical exam, Miami was calm and tolerant of handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Miami so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS: In the shelter Miami has been highly social with handlers, seeking attention and enjoying all interactions. He pulls on the leash but is manageable to walk for all handlers. Outside he is playful and will trade toy for toy easily, and continue to seek handler attention.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13): Due to Miami’s bite history, we recommend an adult only home. _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Due to Miami’s bite history, we behavior department recommends Miami be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Miami to acclimate comfortably to her new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Miami to new and unfamiliar situations. Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: While Miami has shown that he is social with handler, he has bitten in a time of extreme stress. The behavior department recommends an experienced adult home only until he can acclimate to his new home environment for the behavior to be further assessed. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is advised; force-free, reward based training only is recommended.
